The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret Review

One of the oldest operating theatres in Europe, this place was built in the 17th century and now stands as a tiny but fascinating museum of surgical and medicinal history. There are often lectures and events held in the building (which sits beside St Thomas' Hospital) - which means there's usually a shout-out for a volunteer to lie on the old operating table block...!

The theatre is situated near London Bridge Metro Station, opposite the town market. It's interesting to enter the museum. A spiral staircase with 52 narrow steps is full of exhibits and lace news about Victorian and Edwardian medicine. It used to be an operating room. Now it's a theatre.

Far away from the city, there are not many tourists, relatively quiet and comfortable.

Medical museums are a bit hard to find. On the top floor of a building, we have a better understanding of 19th century medicine and surgery. The museum shows a Victorian demonstration of how to operate without basic hygiene such as anesthesia.

There are many good exhibitions and good visits, but the atmosphere here is not very personal.
