I had high expectations of Capella Sydney after staying multiple times at Capella Bangkok and being treated as though I were the most important person in the hotel, just like all of the other guest who stay there are. The attention to service detail at Sydney location unfortunately failed very short to meet my expectations. The booking process on the website was glitchy and the pricing was inconsistent, sometimes showing pricing including tax sometimes not without indication and only upon receiving confirmation via email from reservations was the price confirmed, which did not match the screenshots of the reservation when I placed the booking so I had to go back and forth with reservations via phone and email to simply confirm the accurate pricing for my stay. After creating an account to log on to their booking platform although the option of modifying the booking was offered, the feature did not work on the site, so you had to cancel the booking and book a new booking if you simply wanted to extend by 1 day. This is before I even arrived at the hotel. When I did arrive, it is of course, no small feat that the restoration of this historic building was carried out with the utmost respect for the architecture, from the flooring material to the fenestration and even the internal grand stair way was brilliantly retro-fitted with current code requirements for the handrail in a historically appropriate yet contemporary solution. The hotel does not have many floors, so I encourage anyone to take the stairs to experience the beauty of the restoration work. The recognition of the strong identity of the urban location and sense of place in Sydney’s CBD offers us a promise, an encounter, as the space of the possible. I wish I could say the same about the interior design. There was a real disconnect between the intent of the architecture and that of the interior design. The decoration at best seemed vague, and so for the guest experience, how could one of have a point of view about the effect of the design? The space of the expectant “possible” relationship I was expecting from the simple activity of stepping into Farrer Place’s south entryway marked Department of Agriculture, as local stories interpreting colonial history with ancestral elements of the Eora people by Waayni artist Judy Watso unfolded, or the sense of expansive freedom through the bronze Palazzo doors on Loftus Street into the latent quiet luxury of the grand stair was lost when I was met with the contrasting designs and colours of the lift lobby vestibule axminster carpet and that of the corridor carpet to the guest rooms, able to be seen in the same frame. Although an argument can be made about eclecticism and the use of curating a collection of exceptional vintage and contemporary objects this was not the case here, it read as a mismatched bric-à-brac (to borrow a Victorian word from the building time period that's true meaning in French means ”any old way” or ”at random”). Now reading the other reviews it seems as though overcharging and putting extra charges on your credit card is a common occurrence at Intercontinental Sydney! We like the other reviewers have had a horrendous time because trying to get someone to actually help is like an actual comedy act. They will not return your calls or emails, their team just don’t care. You’ll get the same “we will contact you with an update” and then you won’t hear from them. Consistently disappointing. The entire hotel is like a funny farm where not one person knows really what they’re really meant to be doing. Consistently making mistakes with no apologies, wrong orders, long waiting times and zero leadership. The final blow was seeing all the extra charges on our card after a a zero star stay and STILL awaiting refunds because we can’t seem to get anyone to contact us! Do yourself the greatest favour and stay elsewhere! The hotel is renovated but they forgot to renovate their ability to deliver the reputation of the Intercontinental brand. So frustrating and the incompetence is unbelievable. DO NOT STAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Location drew me to Establishment, situated near some of my favourite restaurants in Sydney and close to the venue where I was doing business. Establishment delivers for location. I also chose Establishment for a little bit of luxury to break a heavy work schedule and it did not live up to expectation. It seems to be a great party crash hotel for the bucks/hens night with few services that really speak to the time poor luxury business traveller. It’s beautifully styled with a comfortable bed, but that is about the limit. It’s the services and the quality of the room features that let it down. No 24 hour room service and a menu that is not reflective of the quality of the food precinct it’s situated in. (I went out to get an excellent take away breakfast that I brought back to my room rather than order anything from the scant breakfast menu that looked like a take away menu). I left my computer power charger at home, but concierge could not help me with one to borrow or ideas on where I could buy a replacement. The bath is very narrow and not much hot water - I boiled the kettle to get it a bit warmer. Hunter products in the bathroom but there was no hair conditioner and few of the little luxuries that you would expect in such a stylish bathroom such as extra towels, make up mirrors/lighting, an extra soap for the bath. The room fittings are pretty tired and scuffed up. It’s certainly ready for a bit of a renovation/ refresh. The carpet looks like it’s seem some amazing parties. The room, particularly the bathroom, smelled strongly of cigarette smoke despite it being a non smoking hotel. The bathroom shower curtain was really dirty and needs to be replaced. Lots of marks on the walls and scuff marks on furniture - looks tired and a bit worn out. There is no dedicated space to work for business travellers, other than a long table near the window but I had to sit on the bed. Inside the lift the small seating looks like it had seen some parties as well and not clean enough to sit on. No hand sanitiser anywhere. This was the most expensive room rate for the CBD area I wanted to be in, and the result was disappointing. As a lover of boutique hotels, I was looking forward to staying here, but based on this experience I won’t return and can’t recommend this one.

I don’t like a dark entrance to a hotel really, not inviting. Dark corridors. The electronic blinds have a mind of their own and open as you enter the room and once during the night. Body wash say empty for 2 days so washed with shampoo until I requested a top up twice in one day. Bed comfort wasn’t anything special like other hotels nearby. Someone charged drinks to my room that once reversed at checkout, a female employee called me to sign a permit to charge my credit card. How many times I had to explain I wasn’t even at the bar the night before, she wasn’t interested. No apology, no how was your stay. I had to tell her to check signatures against mine on arrival. Never again. I visit Sydney every few weeks. I’d rather not travel that week than stay there. I’ll keep staying at a hotel on the next corner who value their guests each and every time I stay there.
