Change of travel plans meant that I needed to spend a night in Thessaloniki before returning home. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend more time in a city I have visited and enjoyed over many years. Today the city is much improved in terms of its environment, cultural life and the impact of many thousands of creative students. the position on the sea is superb and, altogether, this is a great place to visit. Set near the sea, just off Aristoteleous pedestrian street, is the MonAsty Hotel. It seemed fine for a night. What a delightful surprise this turned out to be! This hotel is a gem, at every level. The welcome was outstanding. Calm and efficient as well as friendly and exceptionally informative. All helped surprisingly by a nice welcome glass of prosecco. After check-in, a staff member accompanied me to the room. The room was spacious, beautifully appointed and quite luxurious. The design and ambience of everything in this hotel is top class. It has an understated elegance that enchants - with a quiet and serene air. After exploring the streets and cafés, i was able to come back and enjoy a cocktail in the charming and swish bar. An excellent night's sleep was followed by an excellent breakfast - with some of the best eggs benedict I have ever had. Wonderful and relaxing hotel. My only regret is that I only had one night. I look forward to returning one day.

Not all five star hotels are created equal. This truth was evident from the moment I stepped into the hotel. Car parking - that will be 20 euro a night. Alternatives? No idea (turned out that you can park three blocks away for less than 10 euro a night depending on departure time next day). Room upgrade - impossible - I get that this isn't always possible but the delivery by staff is all important. The room - ok - nothing to write home about (shower leaked from the top - when I mentioned as I left no one seemed to care - which just about summed up my stay). The view - from the back side of the hotel - not worth the money. The breakfast - passible. All in all would I go back? Honestly no - I'd definitely look elsewhere.

I stayed in August 2021, slight delay in the review. Basic accommodation, a little dated but an extremely good value hotel; was very clean, aircon worked well and there was always hot water. They were communicative prior to my stay and also arranged a transfer from the airport. Reception gave great restaurant recommendations and assisted with planning/booking boat trips and a bus journey to Halkidiki, also assisted in calling taxis and ensuring I knew the price of the journey before getting in the car. There is fruit shop across the road with friendly locals and lovely produce (could purchase and store in refrigerator in room). There is also a bakery around the corner for savoury and sweet snacks (sandwiches, pastries, cakes and ice cream) - all delicious - also purchased my take away coffee from there for my early morning walks. The location of the hotel was great for me as I walked to most places of interest, it felt safe during both the day and night (take the obvious precautions). As a solo traveller I was located the room near reception which was a little noisy at times but absolutely adequate for my short getaway. They were also easily able to extend my stay by an additional night after a last minute travel itinerary change, this was very much appreciated. I loved the city and would certainly stay again for ease despite there being an array of more glitzy hotel options in the City.

Nea Metropolis is a lovely budget hotel in a central and convenient location in Thessaloniki’s main city centre. I have stayed here numerous times and think of it as home from home. It has undergone a spruce up and some renovation during the pandemic lockdowns, and is looking good. The staff are great: friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I love this place.
