Mr Bean Holiday was one of the biggest surprises of our trip to Borneo. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn't simply a hotel but a family business run with genuine pride. We arrived late, and our driver pointed to a gentleman quietly sitting in the restaurant, saying, ”That's the Chinese owner. He's always here looking after the family business.” We soon realised he was right. Every morning the owner was there, greeting guests and making sure everything ran perfectly. That level of care is rare. The peaceful location, just a few minutes from Semporna's jetty, is ideal. After a day exploring pristine islands, crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and extraordinary marine life, returning here felt wonderfully relaxing. The complimentary shuttle made getting around effortless. The rooms were spotless, the beds comfortable, the large swimming pool was perfect for unwinding, and complimentary drinking water was always available. Nothing felt neglected. The restaurant was another highlight. We enjoyed excellent seafood and authentic Malaysian cuisine, while our children were equally well looked after with familiar favourites. Every meal was fresh, delicious and fairly priced. Mr Bean Holiday doesn't try to be something it isn't. Instead, it delivers sincere hospitality, thoughtful service, comfort and exceptional value. We would return without hesitation.

We stayed here expecting a bit more because the hotel had so many excellent reviews. Overall, our stay was fine, but it didn't quite live up to those expectations. The room was clean, with fresh towels and bed linen, and the bathroom was generally in good condition. The shower drain was clogged when we arrived, but after we informed the staff, they came and fixed it quickly, so it was only an issue for the first day. The air conditioning worked very well, although it was difficult to find a comfortable temperature at night as it tended to get very cold. There is a small swimming pool, which was nice, but it only had a couple of sun loungers and they were quite dirty, so we didn't really feel like using them. Breakfast was included, but unfortunately we didn't feel comfortable eating there. Some of the buffet dishes were left partially uncovered, and with the warm temperature in the breakfast area, the food didn't look particularly appealing. We also noticed that the shared refrigerator was quite dirty, which didn't inspire much confidence. We decided not to eat there and had breakfast elsewhere every morning instead. One feature we really appreciated was the free self-service laundry. Having washing machines available, together with laundry detergent, was extremely convenient and a big plus during our trip. The staff were polite and pleasant whenever we interacted with them. They weren't especially warm or proactive, but they were helpful when we needed assistance, such as fixing the shower drain. Overall, this is a decent place to stay if you're looking for something simple, but based on our experience, we don't think it quite matches the exceptionally high ratings it currently has.

I was looking for an affordable option for the overwater bungalow last minute in semporna. Sand bay had few reviews but is almost brand new. For the price it was all brand new stuff in the room and facilities. I wish there was more coral in their little cove but I liked the paddle board for activities. They also have 5 cats that are well loved and cared for (not stray cats). The food and service was great. Best food in sabah! Everyone is friendly and welcoming and they do a good job to provide service for a pleasant stay.

Pleasant overnight escape at Nusa Kuya Resort with a group of four, and we truly made the most of it! From snorkeling in the clear waters to enjoying the buffet, belting out songs at karaoke, and watching the turtles—it was a full, fun itinerary. Every activity felt worth it, and the friendly, accommodating staff made the experience even better. Definitely a memorable short getaway!
