We stayed at the Hakone Hotel as part of a tour group. We had a spacious twin room with a view over the garden and part of Lake Ashi. The room spotlessly clean and was very comfortable. We had a comfortable chair and a comfortable 2 seater couch as well as comfortable beds. In the morning we had a beautiful clear view of Mt Fuji from the grounds of the hotel. We had a delicious included dinner at the hotel as well as a good buffet breakfast. There was a capsule coffee/tea maker in the room that I tried with Earl Grey Tea which was a bit strong for my taste.

This hotel is a historic property set in an iconic setting. We stayed in the Forest Section which features large, comfortable rooms that were a little dark, the bathroom lighting could be improved. Here is my issue. We arrived around 1:15 and we’re told that we could check in at 3:00. We had lunch in their cafe ( 50$) and asked again about an hour later if we could have early access. The very polite desk clerk replied “ Yes, for $70 dollars “. Astounded , I countered that we were departing early 2 days later, and he reduced the amount to $35. Now here is where communication becomes an issue: I continued the “are you kidding me?” and he kept bowing. I thought the issue was settled. That night and the next we ate at their lovely restaurants, French and the Cascade. Food and service was superb. With wine we spent about $900. Check out was early, and my husband didn’t really examine the bill. When we were back in our free early access room in Tokyo I noticed the $35 charge. I contacted the hotel’s customer service and they confirmed the charge. So, what about customer hospitality? I have NEVER been charged an early access fee for an hour. They have been times when we patiently waited for a room to be readied, and never demanded a rebate. It is all part of the guest/host agreement, I think this is probably a corporate decision by the Fujiya Group. Rethink your mission, guys, make guests feel wanted!
MMeng ChuanHad a delightful stay at the ryokan. The rooms are quite impeccable with the smell of the hinoki filling the room, it was quite heavenly.
We chose the room with the outdoor bath. And given the cool weather, our bathing experience was amazing.
The location was also perfect if you are making a trip to the Sengokuhara Susuki Pampas Grass fields, which is such a scenic spot and of which we enjoyed walked to and through in the setting sun.
We also opted to have dinner at the ryokan, who specially made it Halal-friendly for us.
What's most amazing to us regarding the ryokan was the service. We had a Nepalese staff speaking with us most of the time, as he was the best in English. He personally brought us to our room and even gave an introduction to the room, and what we needed to take note off. After we checked out, he enquired how we were making our way to the train station. There was conveniently located bus stop just outside the ryokan, so we were going to take that. On our way out, he drove out and stopped along the road beside us (good thing there was no traffic) and to our utter surprise offered to drive us to the train station. We found out that he was actually knocking off, but instead of going straight home to rest (before his next shift in the evening), he wanted to drive us to the station. We were exceptionally touched at his extremely kind gesture (as we didn't think it was hotel protocol to do so). Nonetheless, his actions left us a beautiful and lasting impression on the ryokan.
Would definitely go again for the luxurious experience!
This was my first experience at a ryokan. I am so glad that my sister booked a traditional ryokan with a private Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. We also had our own onsen in the room. It was so very relaxing and beautiful. The whole experience put me back into the days of old Japan. I would love to stay here again! The staff does not speak much English but they do use a translator tool that makes it easy to converse and understand. The food was amazing! The sleep was amazing. The room was spacious and accommodated 4 adults. The onsen was so relaxing. The lobby and ryokan is gorgeous and well upkept! We did stay in a newly renovated room-Zuisan. They are very accommodating to your every need. I truly felt like I was in Old Japan. I want to go back again soon. (note: I will update with photos later as there are so many)
ผผู้เข้าพักWe had a fantastic experience at Hakone Airu, one my wife and I will never forget. The setting is beautiful, with fantastic views out from our balcony and private onsen (outdoor bath). The whole experience is set up for privacy, so as well as the private bath, you are given a private dining room with the food brought to you. Even the bar has little individual booths. Although it has many features of a traditional Ryokan (matted flooring, traditional robes) the hotel is also very modern - our room was well air conditioned, and although we did not need to use it, our room had a large modern television. The dining experience was what really made the experience unique. The food is served “Kaiseki” style so there are lots of courses - the closest western comparison is a tasting menu. Be prepared to be adventurous here, we went for the crab option as our ‘main’ but we were also served sashimi (raw fish), cooked eel, some kind of sea snail (looks awful but tastes delicious!) and even jellyfish! There is a lot of food and we felt under no pressure to eat everything, so don’t be put off if you don’t like something. We were given a printed menu in English which makes a great souvenir as well as letting us know what we were eating. Breakfast in the morning had two options - a Japanese style (raw fish, vegetable hotpot, and a whole grilled fish) or western style (sausage, egg, bread). We went for one of each! The staff were all fantastic. Well trained, spoke very good English, and very friendly and welcoming. It’s such a unique experience I would recommend you only need one night here, even if you stay in the area longer. Hakone itself is a very pretty town and a lovely contrast from the extremes of Tokyo. Thank you to all the staff at Hakone Airu for a fantastic stay.
