We recently stayed here for a couple of nights while visiting Bletchley Park and Woburn Safari Park. It's very clean and looks lovely, and the location by the river is beautiful. The lady on reception, although new, was very friendly and chatty. The breakfast is a standard buffet although the poached eggs were cooked to perfection. We also had dinner in the restaurant which was very good and we all enjoyed the food. There is a nice area out the back to sit outside and a big building on the side for functions so we didn't hear any noise in our rooms from the Thursday evening function. The outside area has a bar which is supposedly open until 11pm but when we were there it closed at 9pm (apparently due to short staff) without any pre-warning or notice to their customers. However.....the service for our meal was a bit random with several staff attending our table at various times. There were way too many staff in the restaurant with several of them standing around waiting for something to do, and we were advised that two staff had not come in. The staff need to be better trained and organized and the number of staff could be substantially reduced if operating more efficiently. I can see several other reviews mentioning the same issue so maybe the hotel will attend to this. But our main issue was with the bar. Our friends had gone down to the bar about 5pm for a drink only to be ignored and not even spoken to let alone served and so they returned to their room. After we had finished our meal we ordered four drinks, we waited fifteen minutes and no drinks arrived so we asked where they were and the staff member went to find out. We were then advised that they would be done soon but after another 7-8 minutes we still hadn't received them so we got up to pay our bill and leave. At this point the bar staff member came over and apologized for not pouring our drinks as he had been 'busy'. We were sat within view of the bar and there had only been four young ladies ordering drinks who he had been chatting with and one hot chocolate order so we told him this wasn't true. When we said we had cancelled the order he stomped off making a point of screwing up our order ticket and throwing it away, as apparently he hadn't even started our order received almost 25 minutes before. There was no reason at all for the delay except that the staff member just hadn't bothered to do his job. Then upon receiving our bill for the meal the four undelivered drinks were still on the bill! After having them removed along with the service charge we settled our bill and were kindly offered a bottle of prosecco by the duty manager. Unfortunately for the serving staff they lost their tip due to the bar staff and whoever didn't check the bill correctly before giving it to us. The following evening sitting out side my wife went to the bar to get a bottle of lager and two Baileys. Upon returning she advised that the Baileys were £9.50 each!
