This is a very professionally run small hotel. There were several times when the level of service rose to the very highest level. First, I had a cold when I made the reservation and I asked if I was too under the weather to come to Boston, could I use the non-refundable payment toward a future stay-the front desk person was very helpful and allowed that. During my stay everything was very well done. The next really, really special service was that I left the hotel very early due to travel plans and I forgot one of my most important reference books and my umbrella! I am an experienced traveler and I have a very careful leave the room routine. I must have been too tired. I realized my mistake quickly and called about an hour after having left. The front desk person checked on my room and found the two items and immediately offered to work with the owner to get them mailed to me...and the owner did this without adding a charge!! Maybe because I had been understanding that my room was a little cold due to very strong 50 mile per hour winds that night...whatever the reasons, I was very impressed and will make this my go to hotel on my regular Boston trips.

Spent two nights here. Wouldn’t do it again if we had it to do over. House itself is lovely and there is history here. But it’s almost as if the owner is trying to make it based on the history rather than what is offered for the guests in the way of service and amenities. As I said, the house is beautiful. However, the grounds aren’t anything to write home about. The whole backyard is fenced off and hidden behind tarps because it is a disaster. It needs a lot of attention and TLC. The rooms are small as they are in a lot of older homes. And we were surprised to find that the doors to the bedrooms did not have locks on them. First and only time we’ve experienced that. They would have been large enough if there wasn’t so much furniture in them. We didn’t have room to have our two suitcases open and walk around the room but there was an old chair and a dresser with some antique porcelain-ware on it taking up space. The chair was very uncomfortable (We could feel every spring in it when we sat down and noticed the same same on some of the other furniture in the common areas of the house.) and the dresser, while a nice piece of furniture, took up space that could have been more efficiently used in a small room. The bathroom was very small also and the biggest issue was there wasn’t any place to put our toiletries. And finding a used washcloth on the floor when we checked in didn’t help with our impression of the care and attention given to cleaning measures taken between guests. Breakfast also left something to be desired. They set out a counter with pastries and fresh fruit, juice and coffee and a variety of cereals. Something was mentioned about being able to make eggs if we wanted them but we had the distance impression that doing so would be an inconvenience. WiFi was available but we found it to be intermittent in our room. The final straw for us was that we had reserved two rooms with king beds on the second floor. But after the reservation was confirmed, we had a call from the owner that he had messed up the reservations and double booked a room. So we would have to have one of our two rooms be a room with a queen bed on the third floor. It turned out that the room was more suited for Hobbits than normal size humans and for that nuisance and having to carry luggage up an extra flight of narrow and steep stairs, no offer of a discounted rate was made. Overall, just a major disappointment on several fronts which made this an overpriced and overrated experience.

I don't usually use Econo Lodge but it was $100 less than the place up the street while still being close to the MA Pike. Planning a trip to Tanglewood for a night show, I was just looking for a place to sleep before heading home in the morning. I reserved a King Room with a mountain view. Arrived to find paint peeling off the place. I was given room 209 on the 2nd floor so after driving around the back of the building and climbing the stairs with peeling paint I started looking for my room. There was no room marked 209. I tried a couple doors - one a storage room, the second after messing with the key to get it open turned out to be 209 with no room number on it. I noticed that the other rooms had the more secure entrances although one had a tacky sign explaining how to get the door to open. My own door was very difficult to close and I had to slam it to secure it. I went into the room -the only one that does NOT face the street or mountain or connect to another room- and the place is pitch dark. I tried to open the vertical blind but could neither turn them to open or pull them completely open. Afraid I would break them, I went back downstairs and asked the manager to help. He came up and played them awhile, said it was catching somewhere but was able to push each side back about 10 inches to let a little light in. That's when I saw how dirty the place was. The back of the door had all sorts of hand prints and other dark marks. There was stuff all over the wood floor. There was a refrigerator that was so covered with dust and dirt that I wouldn't even touch it. The baseboards were filthy. The bathroom, except the walls and baseboard seemed relatively clean. The slight opening in the blinds also revealed another door in the room. I opened it to find a stairwell leading down to the owners apartment and only a bedroom lock on it. Since the door opened outward I could not even put anything in front of it to keep it from being opened. Being a woman traveling alone this was very unsettling. I noticed the the lamp next to the bed was unplugged. Checking out the light itself and found the switch was broken off, so instead of fixing it, it was just unplugged. The little alarm clock next to the bed did not display the correct time and by this time I had decided that I didn't want to touch anything in the room. I left as soon as possible and arrived back at the hotel and had to go around the back of the building which again, being alone I was very uncomfortable with. I had to sleep on the opposite side of the bed since the light on my side was broken. Of course, since I couldn't close the blinds, the outside lights along the outdoor walkway for the remaining upstairs rooms (which were at a 90 degree angle to my room) were shining in on the bed. I get into the bed which creaks every time I moved. The bed was extremely uncomfortable feeling like a spring or something was poking me in the back. The pillows were just as bad

Excellent location. Easy to walk to many sites. 2 blocks to green line’s Arlington T. I stayed 5 nights in a room with a shared bath. Both were spotless. There were 4 rooms on my floor, 2 of which were en-suites. I only had a slight wait for the bathroom once, having to share with just one other room. There is only shampoo & soap in the bathroom, no conditioner or lotion. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room was well-lit with several lighting sources except for the area next to the mirror. I used the hallway mirror, with the light streaming in from the skylight, to put on makeup. There was no closet just a coat rack with hangers on it, which was perfectly fine. There is a satisfying send-off of a cold continental breakfast each morning from 7:30-10. There’s 24-hour tea/coffee, fruit & cookies here, which is a nice plus after a full day out. There’s a fridge for shared use here, none in the room. It’s a nice area to meet other guests, if you’re so inclined. The staff is the best here. All the staff greeted me every time I passed them. They are so friendly & helpful! The office insightfully offered off-the-beaten-track sightseeing options. Communication from them before I got here was clear. The office is open during the day. You are given codes for the front door & your room. I found the area around the hotel very quiet, but I am from a major city & live on a noisy, main street. My room faced Commonwealth St. There was an A/C unit, that I didn’t use in the window, letting in some noise but it didn’t affect me. They do offer earplugs. When I’m on vacation, I want to sleep peacefully. However, my big complaint here is that I was woken up on 2 mornings by the staff. The weekend staff was so quiet. Yay! During the week the woman cleaning rooms & the man were very loud, especially the woman. They were carrying on loud, personal chitchat both in the hallway & in the room next to me with the door open. I could even hear her from the floor below. Voices carry even more in a house! Another morning a contractor was in evaluating repairs. As he went from floor to floor with a staff member, they loudly chatted & laughed while banging walls as his cellphone rang loudly. Kudos that they are maintaining this lovely building. However, a heads up would have been extremely appreciated. I would not have planned to sleep in that day & would have adjusted my bedtime. It also would have been better if this appointment was in the afternoon & not first thing Monday AM, which I realize may not have been possible. I’m not sure if I would stay here again. On the one hand I loved it here. On the other hand, I value my sleep & get quite annoyed when I’m woken up unnecessarily.
