Vietnam public holidays in the Year of the Rabbit 2023

Holidays dot our calendars and help us mark the progress of time. As the New Year draws near, if you haven’t decided where to kick off your New Year, then Vietnam is a good option.

Vietnam also celebrates New Year’s Day according to the Gregorian Calendar on 1 January. Many people in Vietnam stay up long hours the night before, spend time with families and friends, and watch fireworks displays on December 31 to welcome the new year.

Vietnamese New Year, also known as the Tet Festival, is the most significant festivals of the year in Vietnam. Tet, is an abbreviation for Tet Nguyen Dan, which is Vietnamese for the feast of the first morning of the first day of their calendar. The holiday is celebrated for several consecutive days.

Traditionally, people will clean their houses as Tet approaches in an attempt to ‘sweep away’ any bad luck that has accumulated from the old year. Families will also gather to have a big feast on sumptuous dishes, snacks, and sweets and to begin the new year together.

Hung Kings Commemoration Day has been an official public holiday in Vietnam since 2007. It is celebrated on the 10th day of the third lunar month, and in 2023, the day falls on April 29.

The holiday is dedicated to the memory of the Hung line of kings who ruled Vietnam as priestly kings for more than 2,500 years up until around 250 B.C.

Hung Kings Commemoration Day is also a joyous way for young people to learn about their country’s ancestors and ancient rituals.

April 30 is a public holiday in Vietnam, which marked the official end of the Vietnam War and the 1975 reunification of South and North. Every year on this day, flags are raised across the country to commemorate the reunification of Vietnam at the end of the American War.

Reunification Day, also known as ‘Liberation Day’, is marked with military processions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Many locals take advantage of the time off to visit loved ones in their hometowns, hotels and restaurants put on feasts for their guests, and veterans are celebrated for their sacrifices by their families and friends.

Vietnam observes International Labor Day every May 1. Labor Day is meant to commemorate the international workers’ movement of the 1800s. In Vietnam, it is also used to mark the coming of spring. It is marked by workers’ rights parades put on by labor unions in many cities.

National Day is a public holiday in Vietnam, which is observed on every September 2 to remember the day in 1945 that Vietnam declared its independence from French colonial control. It is the day on which Ho Chi Minh read aloud Vietnam’s Declaration of Independence in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi.

Workers will enjoy a 4-day national holiday break. Those who work overtime or work night shifts during the holiday would get a wage bonus of at least four-times their normal daily wage.
