A special experience for those who are into Norwegian culture and history is this museum that holds artifacts, evidence, vessels and other items from life of Thor Heyerdahl, the famous sailor who crossed the Pacific on the balsawood raft.
This museum houses the real Kon-Tiki raft that sailed from Peru to Polynesia for 101 days in 1947. It’s amazing to even imagine this small balsa wood raft floating in the vast ocean and knowing that everyone survived.
I really loved this Museum. The voyages were spectacular. The exhibits were nicely put together to beautiful scale. That really helped to immerse you into the museum. Following Norwegian standard pricing entrance fee was 80 NOK.
The Kon-Tiki Museet has what's left of Kon Tiki, the ship that Thor Heyerdahl used to prove his theory that south americans could have reached Polynesia. He constructed the boat out of materials that would have been available at the time, mostly balsa wood. There is some controversy about what he proved in his successful transit, though, since he started his journey with a 50 mile tow out of the South Pacific gyre, which would have taken him north instead of west. The museum didn't say much about that.
