Tourist's Choice – Times Square in New York.
When it comes to New York, most people will think of the Statue of Liberty or Times Square. Located in the heart of Manhattan, Times Square is filled with large billboards and neon lights. It's a photogenic spot and one of the must-visit locations for tourists. However, it is also a place that locals tend to avoid (I know the platform would probably want me to promote tourist areas, but I am just reflecting the true opinions of the locals. My American classmates usually spend their holidays in cafes, bookstores, parks, or go to see musicals/plays/movies, focusing on leisure activities), and it's not where you can experience the real New York, just as not all of Japan is like Kabukicho.
But if you really want to check it out and also want to see more of New York's cityscape, if you have the stamina, you can start from Washington Square Park, walk up along Fifth Avenue, and you will pass by iconic New York buildings like the Flatiron Building (22nd Street), Madison Square Park (23rd to 26th Streets), the Empire State Building (34th Street), Bryant Park and the New York Public Library (42nd Street). Turn left at 42nd Street, then head up Seventh Avenue, and you will soon see Times Square! Walking at a normal pace, the whole journey takes about 45 minutes. You can enjoy the cityscape of New York, and it's definitely worth the fatigue!
Be aware that in tourist areas, there are many people and pickpockets; at night, when it's crowded, thieves take advantage of people who are busy taking photos. The streets are also dirty because of the crowds. I once accidentally took the wrong subway and got off at Times Square, and I had to walk quickly with my bag in front of me to avoid any trouble. In tourist areas in the US, there's a special 'attraction' – people dressed in mascot costumes, like the Mario Brothers, Sonic, and Elmo. Similar to those selling bracelets in Paris, they will approach you, offer to take a photo with you, and after the photo is taken, they will ask for a tip. If they see you taking a photo of them, they might also ask for money. So remember to be careful when taking photos, and if you encounter such people, just refuse and send them away.
New York at night with Times Square being a buzzing and dazzling points of business and culture
Perhaps the most iconic NY place to visit! There’s so much going on there, prepare to be constantly bamboozled.
非常繁忙到处都是拥挤的人,有打扮着奇装异服的人会跟你打招呼拉你拍照是要钱的最好不要理他们,周末有时候有表演,很吵闹。周围有很多商店和百老汇的剧院。
