Hakodate started near this motozaka in the first place
Original Text
The origin of the place name Hakodate is derived from the fact that Masamichi Kono, who crossed Ezo in the 15th century, built a "pavilion" around earthworks and moats. It is commonly said that it is a square building = Hakodate. After that, the Japanese power was defeated and declined in the conflict with Ainu in the 16th century, but it is said that the population in the vicinity increased as trade with the north became popular again in the 18th century. In other words, it seems that the vicinity of motosaka was the birthplace of Hakodate since more than 300 years ago when the bugyo sho was placed here.
There is an explanation board in front of the statue of Admiral Perry, under Motomachi Park, and in front of the British legation. It is a place that was originally named Hakodate, and you can see the importance of analogy from what is around it.
