Played a round of golf with my wife at 1.12pm April 22nd., both mid-handicappers.They don’t pair players with others and tee off at 12 min intervals. Therefore, a nice feeling of being unrushed and distracted. The welcome and attention given prior to play was excellent in a calming environment. The starter was very informative and courteous. We thankfully had a buggy as we recorded over 8 miles covered by a GPS watch. Not sure if a buggy is compulsory. The course design is very impressive as it meanders through the hills with each hole set apart from the others. There are a number of elevated tees and greens with penal, plentiful bunkers everywhere. Accuracy of shots is paramount and length less important. Miraculously, we lost only two balls in total between us ! Pace of play was good as we hardly saw other players and took around 4+ hours. The course condition is not good, fairways in particular being bare and hard in places, although I suspect it is improving from last year’s drought. Then, comes the cost, which is hefty, at well over Euro200. I enjoyed the experience but am not drawn back for another round.

On arriving at the reception we were greeted by a lady at the desk all official but very welcoming, we checked in and were taken to our 2 bed apartment, on opening the door we were astounded at the size and attention to detail, a very large sitting room, amply equipped kitchen and dining area and bedrooms with king sized comfy beds, plenty of hot water for showers and baths and a large outside garden space with tables, chairs and sun loungers. The food was buffet style breakfast but on one occasion it came from the kitchen as it was early in the season and limited visitors. The golf course was challenging with 12 minute tee times so you had the feel of millionaires golf as you barely saw other golfers. the resort is out of the way but a 25 minute taxi ride gets you to a small village along side a river with bars and restaurants

After looking at recent reviews on here I wasn't expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised. The course is amazing and the fairways are coming back slowly from the hosepipe ban of last summer. Playing Pick and place wasnt an issue and onluy a few bare spots. The Villa was a great size for 4 people and all the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Being what it si the drinks and food were on the pricier side but 10€ for an uber to town worked for us. I will definatly be back this time next year!!

Monte Rei offers a unique setting, nestled in an expansive landscape of soothing tranquillity. From the very first moment, I was treated with great hospitality. The service, whether it was the organisation around the driving range, breakfast or questions at Reception/Conciere, was exceptionally good. The tastefully furnished apartment left nothing to be desired in terms of comfort, and the view of hole 18 as the sun rose was a delight. The golf course offers a design that makes a golfer's heart beat faster. The 12-minute tee times give you the feeling that you can play your round all by yourself. There is no flight breathing down your neck to spoil your enjoyment. Even the neighbouring holes are rarely seen. The greens were in very good condition, but sometimes not playable without a handicap due to quite many bunkers ;) I will definitely come back!

Stunning venue, golf course immaculate and impressive customer service from arrival to departure. I have played golf three/four times there and never been disappointed, actually gets better. Often celeb spot, and worth the money for the experience. For the avid golfers you will experience tunnel vision golf, unlike 99% of golf courses each hole is independent to the rest of the course. Maybe a couple of points on the course where you can view another holes but not many. Impossible to cross fairways and you will probably not see another group on the course unless in front / behind you. Tees were putt-able, top tip avoid bunkers from the tee shot and you will enjoy your round.

This place has the wow factor for sure. Upon arrival valet service took the car and clubs away and next time we seen them they were on the back of our buggy prior to us heading to practice facilities for an hour which were all included in the price. Even little things like alignment sticks at the range were just a nice touch. The Nicklaus designed course does not disappoint and I believe another is on the way. Very challenging track but thouroughly enjoyable and if you take the time to enjoy the views along the way it really is a stunning setting to build a course. Back at the clubhouse really enjoyed the tapas sharer which was ideal for us. The Clubhouse Apartments are absolutely stunning with views over the course and beyond. Everything is extremely modern and exactly what you would expect from a 5* facility. This will not be our last visit for sure.

What an unbelievable place Monte Rei is! From the minute we arrived the staff were absolutely fantastic, showed us to the wonderful Clubhouse Residences. The view in the morning from the balcony was pretty special. Arrived to play golf the next morning and was instantly impressed with the level of service we received. Went to the range to hit balls before our round and the range was setup fantastically - the small touches, from the pyramid of balls, to each bay having its own alignment stick, really made it feel like you were being taken very good care of. The course itself was a fantastic experience. A true test for all abilities, with various different Tee positions to suit your ability. Each hole framed beautifully by the natural surroundings, gives you the impression you are alone out on the course. There are plenty of bunkers to be found, but when you inevitably do end up in one, the soft white sand was a pleasure to play out of. Once on the green you will find fantastic putting surfaces, which roll as pure as they look. A nice touch at the end of the round, as they present you with a Monte Rei bag tag, which will give you something to remember this fantastic place by. All in all, a great experience, staff were fantastic and the course was spectacular. Can’t wait for my next visit!

Firstly, let's get the good bits out of the way - The course design is magnificient as you would expect from Jack Nicklaus. The clubhouse design is good, but having to go outside to get from the changing rooms and then inside to the bar, is strange. The staff are very good, but seemed less enthusiastic than in previous visits. I cannot comment on the villas or food as I didn't use these. THE COURSE - I first played Monte Rei the year after is was opened and was spell bound by the condition of the course. Lush green fairways, bright soft sand and perfectly manicured greens and tees. I have played it thrice in the last 12 months and even in this short time the course condition has become absolutely disgraceful. The greens were dressed in sand, possibly necessary but no pre-warning. The fairways are a joke! Very little grass and we resorted to preferred lies - on the best course in the Algarve as it is claimed to be? With the lack of watering, the fairways are very hard, and although wide enough in good conditions, anything landing on a slope at the edge of the fairways results on a lost ball when it bounces at right angles and runs into yellow flowered, clover like plants which devour your golf ball. Your chances of finding your ball is between nil and zero. Why these plants have been allowed to take over the course is a mystery. It should be a relatively easy task for the green staff to strim them back, but all we could see was the same green staff searching through these plants for lost balls! The course manager has got his priorities totally wrong. There is a plan to build an additional course, again with Jack Nicklaus' signature on it, but the money which would be spent on it would be better utilised on bringing the course back up to the standard it once was. The weather is not the problem, it is the management of the course which is the issue. Try playing Quinta Da Cima and Ria just down the road which are in superb condition. Try playing the Quinta do Lago courses which are even better! The Monte Rei course is no longer the best course in the Algarve, I wouldn't rate it in the top 20 at the moment. Superb villas do not mask the terrible condition of the course which is the main reason people go there. Monte Rei is living on its short past history of excellence. We played it in an organised group of 24 golfers and our organisor has stated that he will not bring goups here again until it has been brought back to the standard it once was. I felt sorry for he guys in the group who were playing it for the first time, they were so disappointed and didn't even get the small bag tags as momentos. So to sum up my experience on my latest visit - The course is in terrible condition, The course management is dire, The staff in the shop and bar areas are not so enthusiastic, probably due to negative comments from golfers, It is far too overpriced for the golfing experience you get.
