I wanted an inexpensive room for one night as I was there on a charitie's business. The room had what looked like mould on the walls (see photo). As I had asthma there was no way I was staying in the room. Everything was very dated and the carpet needed replacing. There was no lift and heavy fire doors to push through after climbing three levels of stairs with bags. When I complained and asked for a refund they gave me 40%. The receptionist was great but indicated there were a number of other rooms with the same issue, that it wasn't mould, it was the adhesive on the wallpaper! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, unless you check out your room first.

we enjoyed our stay at Grosvenor. Army at the reception was welcoming and lovely. The room was spacious, comfortable and warm. The location was great to walk around town, garden and beach. Parking was easy too.

Just a little tired and had seen better days.. free parking was good, location was a bit more than walking distance to food and drink, good budget choice for some with free parking..

Lovely old hotel in great location. Our room had been recently refurbished. It was spacious and light and had everything we needed.

By far and away the best hotel in Timaru, that said I’m slightly biased as a big part of my childhood involved the Grosvenor… rooms are big and modern, don’t be fooled by the old school exterior, it just adds to the charm. Someone has had great fun with the artworks, the restaurant and staff are first class… better than the Hilton in Queenstown. Don’t look any further, highly recommended

Great location. i was looking for something central with traditional charm - the hotel in its heyday must have really been something. Today, it's a much faded shadow, in desperate need of renovation, at least some paint on the internal doors and walls. There are obvious signs of some updates, such as the mishmash of interior design, like the Mondrian color blocks against the traditional old-worldly woodwork. A work in progress that has potential to develop.
