On Sri Lanka's sun-baked south coast near the fishing town of Tangalle, Amanwella lies amid 37 acres of coconut trees next to a perfect crescent of golden sand. Combining modernist lines and indigenous materials, the suites are inspired by the work of famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Flooded with light, they each open on two sides to private plunge pools and large terraces overlooking the Indian Ocean. Away from the palm-shaded private beach club and the 47-metre pool, the area's diverse attractions - including tea plantations, treks and temple visits - capture Sri Lanka at its most authentic. Massages and body treatments using all-natural products are available at the Spa. The Restaurant and Beach Club specialise in locally-caught seafood as well as vibrant Sri Lankan curry dishes.

This was my 6th Aman experience and not the best one. The positive’s: I arrived in the evening so didn’t get a sense of how stunning the beach was. One of the best I have seen in Sri Lanka was a combination of golden sands, blue water and palm trees. Grounds are nice, villas are posh GM Carl, checks on you daily. There was a strong start to the Aman hospitality at check-in. They do not have TVs and their response was, we will happy to instal one. The food was really good in both the beach club and the main restaurant. The reality: Activities are hit or miss due to weather, I appreciate the effort to make sure everything is great, but you need to make the decision to go forward with an experience more than 2 hours before you go. City tour was off brand and the transfers were both bad. The negatives: Going to the hotel the driver was speeding in the rain, coming back another driver had no clue where he was going. We messaged our butler and he basically said he wasn’t working for another 3 hours (not what you want to hear). We stopped at the other Aman to grab a drink and use the facilities. We ran into another manager from Amanwella. He said he came to check on us which was really nice, but he didn’t talk to the driver or see us off to make sure the 2nd half of the drive went smoothly. Which it didn’t.
My wife and I booked this hotel months ago to get one of the superior chalets for our stay. We were in Sri Lanka and a few days before this booking was to start I got a message from the Ravan to say there had been an overbooking error and we were being moved to a superior double with a private balcony and the price would be reduced appropriately. On arrival our superior double was probably the worst room in the hotel. The bathroom smells like an open sewer and our private balcony was the open corridor outside our room which had a couple of chairs, judging by the full ashtrays this was clearly smokers corner. When I said this was unacceptable they said they had another room to show me. This turned out to be a completely different hotel and I was expected to pay extra as this was more expensive. Again I refused. We were then left sitting in the corridor with our cases. I then had to run around looking for somewhere to stay. Not exactly what I planned. I would be very reluctant to take this hotels word for anything as even a confirmed booking is no guarantee.
Stayed for four nights and had a fantastic time at the hotel. Great experience when checking in and were warmly greeted by the general manager and other staff. Lovely hotel on the beach front with lots of positives at the hotel. Large room with lovely shower and a nice balcony. Great breakfasand reasonable prices on drinks 🍻 and other meals that were available during our stay. Staff very friendly and many good restaurants within walking distance especially Top Secret restaurant. Superb facilities such as pool table 🎱 table tennis 🏓 darts 🎯 and table football ⚽️. Lovely swimming pool that was clean. Will definitely be back when in Tangalle in the future
