An exquisite, exotic jewel shimmers somewhere in the mysterious alleys of Old Urfa. Hanehan is that rare phenomenon - a hotel that is finer in reality than photographically, even though she is fabulously photogenic. One emerges via a discreet gate into an urban oasis, a centuries-old courtyard centred around a cooling (it was 40 degrees) pond, surrounded by a limestone palazzio carved with symbols and motifs that tell a thousand stories. Our rooms were up a terrace of stairs; both were fabulous, restored with a light touch to accommodate such essential modern luxuries as a comfortable bathroom and air conditioning. The owner, Murat, and his brother Fırat (Euphrates in Turkish) have transferred their own professionalism, charm and above all their boundless enthusiasm and passion for the hotel and their native province, to all their staff, who maintain a level of service and friendliness - friendship in fact - that is unparalleled. They also serve a fantastic breakfast! As well as being an accomplished entrepreneur speaking at least 4 languages, a born savant hugely knowledgeable on subjects ranging from philosophy and food to architecture, archeology and history, Murat is a celebrated figure in his city, a qualified guide and a born savant. My trip was crowned with a trip to Nemrut Dağı under his guidance. No superlative could suffice to describe it. You should take the opportunity to sit with him and his delightful family and discuss where to go and what to see. I only regret not staying longer than 4 nights. Can one give 6 stars?
