Residence Inn Nickerie

Normally, we had to stay in Akira Lodge, Bigi Pan, but because that hotel is already closed for months (the swamp dried out) our touroperator Purity Tours, booked Residence Inn Nickerie for us. Basic hotel, but at a good location in town, next to the market place. They give us a room at the back with a view at a dump and without a balcony. A big difference with what was promised to us in Bigi Pan. We asked for a room with balcony and better view, but were told we had to pay more for that. After a phonecall to the touroperator and after losing half an hour, they gave us a room with balcony without supplement. Room looked old and renovation is necessary. The first night and morning, we had no hot water, but it was fixed in the day. Breakfast was very good and it was nice to be possible to eat outside at the terrace.

This is supposed to be the best hotel in Nickerie. Service is good, complimentary hot breakfast buffet very good, but wear & tear of the room is clearly noticeable. Wi-fi is reasonable, hotel is clean and bed sleeps good. The twin bed is to narrow for 2 adults. Location is in the center of night activities, especially weekends. Restaurant ok. Hotel in need of upgrade. Still my preferred choice because of location, everythingh is still functional and the service.

This is the best hotel Nickerie has to offer. The website does not give a good indication as to how it really is. The rooms are clean, that is the biggest plus. The hotel is outdated, the rooms are pretty basic, AC is very loud and functions on "high" only. The beds are old, even though clean, not really comfortable. The shower is clean, but there were soms things broken (showercurtain was ripped, the hangers were upside down). We ate dinner at the Matutu restaurant in the hotel: horrible. The food was not warm, it seems they forgot to heat it up. It seems they have it ready made and heat it up when you order. This is the worst food i have ever had in Suriname, which is difficult to accomplish. Usually all the food in Suriname is good, served warm and delicious, no matter the price range. Although the service was friendly, you get the feeling that they dont't know what hospitality is. Breakfast the next day was okee, but the coffee was finished and they do not set another pot for the remaining guests. Again: no sense of hospitality. On the website it says that there is a swimming pool, there is not! The pictures on the website are from the hotel in Paramaribo (which is closed now). Paying our bill was not possible by card, there was no internet. So you need to pay cash. The hotelstaff try their best, but the facility is outdated and needs a make-over fast. The facilities at Pak Hap hotel (5 min walk from Residence Inn) are just the same and the price is lower.
