We visited Kashiwaya Onsen with our son and his girlfriend, who had both visited before and highly recommended it. It did not disappoint. The bus ride up the mountain from Nanajoko Station hinted at how special this area is. Upon arrival, steps from the bus stop, we were greeted warmly by staff, explained ryokan etiquette, and showed to our rooms. Our private onsen overlooked the river. We also tried one of the reservable onsens on the property. Wonderful! We had an amazing traditional dinner and breakfast. Food was excellent; our server was friendly and explained about all the dishes we were eating. From start to bubbly finish, everything was excellent! If you want an authentic Japanese hotel stay, come here!

The staff was very kind and courteous. They helped us through the entire stay. The onsens were extremely well kept and beautiful. Through our journey of Japan so far this place will likely stay on top of our favorite experience here. From the people to the food and onsens. Every bit was excellent!

Had a very awesome ryokan service and blissful semi private onsen. I very much liked each explanation of the dishes. We also had the tasting set of the sake, not a fan of sake (yet) but it was a good set. The onsen experience was wonderful. The wooden tub was the most enjoyable as it has the temperature that was manageable for me. Though this one has the shower faucet frozen, I transferred to the adjacent onsen and use the shower there. The most wonderful experience during the onsen was watching the snow fall while dipped in the hot water. It was a magnificent view. The room was very neat. The hoshi room was in tatami for full japanese experience. They arranged the futon beds while we were eating our dinner. They also have crackers and green tea at the cabinet. We drank the tea at the balcony wny watching the mountain with a few snow fall. I also liked the room incense. I had to buy one before going home. Overall, it was quite an experience. I will be recommend to my friends to have them try ryokan onsen as well due to my great first experience. Two thumbs up! More power to shima onsen.

Kashiwaya Ryokan is a wonderful place for western tourists that want to have the onsen experience. The meals are some of the best you can have in Japan. The staff is incredibly nice. Very thankful to Kashiwabara-san for the tour.

Out of this world experience. We went because they offered a vegan meal option and tattoo-friendly onsens. Each guest in our party could choose the meal they preferred (in advance of course!) and both the standard kaiseki and the vegan were amazing! The location is great, the private onsen are sooooo beautiful and so relaxing (going into a hot onsen when it's -7 celcius outside..amazing!), the staff is so nice, the rooms are great..our whole family really loved our stay! Small tip for train travellers : be sure to check with the staff when you check-in about the bus options to go back to Nakanojo station for the next day : the time tables might be slightly different than what is on google maps, and the staff can definitely help you figure it out! Thank you again for the wonderful experience, we definitely recommend this ryokan and hope we will be back soon!

For a foreigner it was a very interesting experience... I like food, the private onsens sleeping on ground was also an experience should try , careful thou if you have problems whith your back it is not very comfortable , but they also have normal beds...

100% recommend. Staff was super polite, helpful and friendly. The food was the best I have ever eaten. First time sleeping on futons didnt know what to expect but they were super comfy. Private onsens were really beautiful, the whole experience was highlight of our Japan trip. Definitely will go back ( maybe for our honeymoon as we got engaged there 😉 )

今回は高齢の親と同行なのもあり、観光はせず、宿でのんびりしたいと思い、利用させてもらいました。和モダンな館内、客室は居心地ごよく、ほのかなお香の香りが落ち着きました。上州牛付きのお料理は、器も凝ってて美味しかったです。けんちんうどんのお汁が温まりました。お風呂は大浴場も、貸し切り風呂も堪能しました。 一点、宿のせいではないですが、小さいお子さんが廊下や階段を走り回っていて、足音がうるさかった💦親御さんは、何も言わないし、少し周りにも気をつかって欲しいものです。

A wonderful experience that was accommodating and utterly magical. Incredible hospitality and facilities, in a cozy peaceful setting. The private shared onsen was incredible, and there are hiking routes and enjoyable sights dotted throughout Shima which make it perfect for a relaxing getaway. I regret only going for one night in my trip. Would go again, with friends.
