This hotel has it all. It is a quiet (and quietly beautiful) establishment set on Kyoto’s Kamo river, which provides an excellent point of reference to find the Genji. It is surrounded by small residences and lanes making it easy to forget that you are just a few kilometers away from Kyoto’s urban center. The design is elegant, featuring stone, wood, and plants, also blending Japanese and Western style in perfect harmony. You feel its tranquility the moment you enter- as you explore the lobby and common space more, the hotel’s namesake “Genji” reveals itself as some design elements are homages to the classic Japanese epic The Tale of Genji. The beds are very comfortable with soft linens, and the bathrooms are spacious and stylish. The staff are superb: patient, kind, interested, and helpful. Their smiles evoke happy memories of our experience even months after staying. The plant-filled rooftop deck is a splendid place to write, have tea or cocktails, or just look eastward over the river and towards the mountains. One evening after rain, the sunset sky was truly awesome. The breakfast should not be missed, and Chef Çelik knocks it out of the park with excellent meals both Japanese and Western. The hotel has free bikes and helmets for guests with which to explore Japan's seventh largest city. Between the comfort, hospitality, and serenity, the Genji is one of those small hotels that feels like a home away from home. A perfect experience and place in every way.
