Surrounded by Greenery, large pool, I m quite a frequent hotel guest and was upgraded to deluxe room when the rooms facing swimming pool for superior no longer available, nice long bath in each room, spacious.. A relaxing vibe, sported a monitor lizard I'm hotel compound, non aggressive type...

I love the interior design and deco of this hotel, it feels really relaxing, and staff are all happy and helpful. The only troublesome part is the car park, where I have to park at the mall behind and every time I need to turn long way up to level 5. There is also no clear indication how to get to hotel from car park and both the staffs I asked did not highlight to me there is a lift direct connecting to hotel end up I dragging my luggage go through the entire mall and outdoor street area to get into the hotel first time after check in.

Looking from the outside, it's not impressive. That is because the town Sandakan is not particularly a clean looking tidy town. However once inside the hostel, everything is well organized. There are regulations for the guests to follow, doing so keeps the place tidy, clean and comfortable for all staying there. For example, taking iff shoes at demarcation points, yes! If everyone does this, the parts without shoes remains clean from the street dirt. The bed is comfortable, but i found the pillow very hard and a bit high to sleep on. The bathrooms are well supplied and clean with hot water. The air conditioning works well in the bedroom. Inclusive is breakfast, with eggs and toast . The staff are super nice, answering all questions about sights to see, and even helping me set up an APP for taxi rides. One thing I found confusing is the many staircases to different parts if the hostel, but I got familiar with these after a while.

We stayed here in 2019 and enjoyed our stay back then, so decided to book again. Unfortunately after this stay we will not be coming back. First off, our room had the most cumbersome door lock, which required you to slide a wooden bar through the handle and padlock it. A pain when your hands are full. Second the front desk person told us to call if we needed anything, but there was no phone in our room nor a phone list with numbers or contact info. Third nowhere to put luggage but on the floor, even though there is a huge dead space along a wall where a luggage stand could’ve easily been placed. The area where to hang clothes, the bench area was too narrow to fit a suitcase. Fourth , no lamp at the bedside, so you have to get out of bed to turn off the lights after reading. Plus the main light is on while others are trying to sleep. Lastly we asked 2 different front desk people to call the RDC to reserve a spot for us for the night walk. Both parties said they would. We when we got to the RDC our names were not on the list. Luckily they let us join as my daughter was really looking forward to it and it was our only night to go. I won’t stay here again. We checked into the Sepilok Nature Lodge after, and for a little bit more we had the most fabulous room, with an upstairs and 3 beds, double sinks, large fridge, bench at the end of each bed for suitcases etc.

Tanini sepilok was a good value for money however, the area is a bit secluded from Sandakan and it’s hard to find grab or food around. The restaurant was limited in breakfast but we didn’t mind. The walk to Rainforest and Orang Utan sanctuary was close and quick.

What I liked a lot: Well situated to visit main attractions in Sepilok: Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre/Sunbear centre/Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), free shuttle bus to the main attractions (09h-14h-16) which was really great. Also offer tours at reasonable prices e.g. Mangroves & Firefly Cruise (recommended). Free water dispenser. To note: rooms are very basic (there is airco), we had some ants in the room, bathroom is outside. Breakfast was limited and minimal. When we were there internet was not functional, luckily we had taken local simcard before with unlimited data so for us, this was not a big issue. Before coming to the hotel, I had sent a mail to have info about tours they offered, but never received a reply therefore I had booked tours with an agency which in the end was more expensive then when I would have it booked with Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat. Possible to book tours on the spot (no need to reserve before coming) but I did not know this in advance.

We booked a dorm room with 2 beds and they said that I only booked 1 room, when the booking said 2 adults and I had paid for 2 people so that didn’t get off to the best start. Laundry is absolutely extortionate, charging per item , one of the local home stays did our washing for 5th of the price. Staff said they would have to charge he to use the Phin to call a hospital. Food portions are small and dorms aren’t the cleanest, didn’t have our dorm cleaned or bin emptied once throughout our 3 night stay. Only 1 fan for a room for 6 people so it’s absolutely boiling at night. Pool could do with being cleaned a bit with loads of floating bugs. Setting is nice to be in the jungle but could do with some improvements, maybe starting off with welcoming customer service.

Nothing happened Did not have wifi during my stay... More likely not to stay there again... I am requesting some compensation for my greatest inconvenience... So sad! I must give credit to all the staff... Very helpful n friendly.. One staff even lend me his personal electrical adaptor to charge my phone ... Good job!

Check in: smooth Room: big enough for couples, comfortable and clean Price: affordable Cleanliness: 5/5 Overall it is good just need to change the rusting water heater and loose shower valve.
