The estate is beautiful. The winery is fantastic and food at the winery is great. However, when paying over $650 per night I am expecting over the top and that wasn’t the case with Ablemarle. We started in one of the cottages which was very nice. There was a power outage and the cottages are not on generator. They moved us to the pool house. You cannot control the heat in the pool house. You have to call the front desk. We had to have the heat adjusted several times. In the middle of taking a shower the water pressure dropped to almost nothing and the water turned cold. When I reported this, I was asked what time I took the shower because they did have someone working on the water but not during the time I took my shower. Unlike the spacious bathroom in the cottage, the bathroom was tiny. I’m fairly sure the bathroom is not to code. You could not open the door all the way because the toilet was in the way. The food in the restaurant was ok. Nothing spectacular and fairly expensive (surf and turf special was $90). As a comparison we had a three course meal at Harrimans in Middleburg for $99. The breakfast eating area was very sunny and tables situated so that one person had to get sun in their eyes. Evidently the curtains were sent to be cleaned and weren’t back yet. We enjoyed a movie which was nice but $30 per person seems a little excessive. The movies are played using Apple TV. The staff was great. But the overall value just wasn’t there for me.
