I recently had the pleasure of staying at a youth hostel that truly stood out for its exceptional qualities. Nestled in a residential area, its location was incredibly convenient, offering a tranquil retreat just a bike ride away from the city center—less than 10 minutes to be exact. This made for peaceful nights, ensuring a restful sleep in a safe environment.
The hostel is run by a delightful couple whose hospitality knew no bounds. They were not only eager to assist with any issues that arose but also went above and beyond by providing bicycles. This thoughtful touch significantly enhanced my mobility around Houston, allowing me to reach various destinations swiftly.
What set this hostel apart was the attention to detail and the array of complimentary amenities, including cookies, milk, cereal, coffee, and tea. The cleanliness and smart technology throughout the house contributed to a seamless stay, making it the best hostel experience I've ever had. The bathroom towels folded into swan shapes were a testament to the owners' dedication to detail, adding a touch of elegance and care.
The warmth of the place was akin to being at home, with the owners always ready for a chat, eager to answer questions, and share their stories and experiences. A highlight for me was the world map on the living room wall, where guests could pin their home countries—a fun and interactive way to connect with fellow travelers.
In summary, this hostel was more than just a place to stay; it felt like a home, or perhaps more accurately, a homestay. It's undoubtedly the best hostel I've ever stayed in globally, blending the comfort of a home with the adventurous spirit of a hostel.
Very friendly house mates. The host was very pleasant and kind.

TTracy MorganI scheduled a stay on the wrong date. The manager comped me $5. Not a big discount but every bit helps. The room was very clean though it had a strong bleach smell. Lots of contractors and their families staying in the hotel and talking outside our door til late and early next a.m.

ผผู้เข้าพักHadn't stayed at The Kendall for several years, so was looking forward to this trip. This is an older, historic property so I knew what to expect. It was nice to see that the bar and restaurant were open. The renovation was done really well. The outdoor patio offered a very nice view. The room, however, was a disappointment. The gap around the door barely allowed the lock bolt to catch. It also allowed an awful lot of light in the room. The bed or the room tilted so the foot end of the bed was higher than the head end. The mattress, and I use the term loosely, felt as old as I am. Reminded me of the feather beds at my grandma's hose as it caused you to roll to the middle of the bed. The shower in the old claw foot tub sprayed water over the shower curtain onto a bookshelf that was hanging on the wall and soaked the few items we had placed there. Thankfully, the supply of towels in the room was enough to clean up the water on the floor. The large water bug didn't seem to mind the added moisture.
I really like this motel. I hope the owners will take the time to notice the little things that make staying at an older property enjoyable.
ผผู้เข้าพักOne of the best locations on all of South Padre. The door of my room was literally only steps away from the beach with parking just as close. This made coming and going very easy with no elevators or long walks to the parking area. On the down side, there were people out on the shared front deck until midnight several nights in a row. They were not excessively noisy but they did have music playing the entire time. Could have done without that but it was not enough to keep me from enjoying my stay. If peace and solitude is what you need, probably should consider staying somewhere else. Otherwise, this is an ideal location at a very reasonable price. Did not visit the bar and there was no food service available at the time of my stay.
MMark DuncanFor genuine motel experience whilst travelling Route 66 the Cactus Inn in McLean was as authentic as it gets. Very basic but was clean and provided a good nights rest. Not much in the way of cafes or food establishments (at least on a Sunday night) however room is equipped with fridge, microwave and coffee machine which is adequate for self provision - local convenience store only two minute drive away. WIFI not the greatest however as pointed out on the many wee notes and bits of info left in the room they don’t actually advertise it. Comfortable stay in one of Route 66’s founding towns, which also hosts the renowned Devils Rope Museum - not something you experience everyday and worth the visit 👍
