Casa Coquina Del Mar B&B

My husband and I picked Casa Coquina Bed and Breakfast because it sounded like an interesting place to spend a weekend getaway. We read the reviews and in general they were good . We booked a suite (Lighthouse) on the ground floor because of my husband’s disability. All the other rooms were on the second and third floors. We were aware that the building was not handicap accessible but certain precautions could have been put in place nevertheless. For instance, the entrance to the building could have had a railing because there were two steps to enter. The bathroom had a tub but no grab bars on the walls. It did have a grab bar on the side of the tub but it was loose and not secure. An accident waiting to happen! As far as the shower was concerned…there was only a bare pipe coming out of the wall with no shower head. Needless to say, for 3 days we were not able to take a shower. These issues were brought to the attention of the staff member, with no solution or action taken. These discrepancies should have been addressed and fixed before allowing anyone to occupy the premises. It’s not the job of a guest to bring them to the attention of the owner. There are no excuses. Taylor was the young lady who worked there by herself during our stay. She was very helpful and pleasant. This bed and breakfast is an old and historic building, built in 1927. Perhaps for whatever reason they do not require by law to make the premises safe and comfortable for their guests. Regardless, attention to detail (there were a number of other disappointments that I have not mentioned) and taking extra simple steps would make a great difference and better overall guest experience. We without question overpaid for our stay - $199/night).

Casa Coquina is the best B&B I’ve ever stayed at! Unique decor, Very clean rooms, exceptionally comfortable beds and amazing breakfast. You will not leave hungry. Great views from the deck to watch the launch and the owners Dennis and Ginny are the perfect host. They make you feel so welcome and at home. Their travel option to and from airport/ port was fabulous and made our trip stress free. Their restaurant recommendation ( Mexican restaurant across the street) was spot on. Food was delicious. This is my go to spot from now on when I cruise!

There were good things and not so good things at Casa. The pros: 1. Very close to NASA 2. Owners and staff were pleasant 3. Our hot breakfast both days was a tasty egg-based dish with fresh fruit and warm cobbler. 4.No dust bunnies in our room and appeared to be basically clean 5. Happy hour was offered which is a great way to meet other travelers. The cons: 1. The place was cluttered. There were so many tchotchkes in our room that it was difficult to place our needed items out in our room. Every room we saw was filled with “collections” on every horizontal surface. In the hallway with the horse and knight, there was a stack of towels as well as a stack of papers on chairs both days we were there. 2. The tv was on constantly in the reception area. When we arrived, the owners were babysitting the grands and the tv was on to entertain them but continued to be on after the kids left. The happy hour was in the reception area and the tv’s noise made it difficult to speak to other guests. I found it peculiar on the second night when we came back to the Casa after dinner, the owners were parked in front of the tv eating their dinner. 3. Everything was painted a dark color in our room and in much of the place which gave it a closed in feeling. (When I write everything was painted, this includes the outlets and the plastic that would have held the shades) I found that peculiar and unappealing but perhaps that is a personal preference. 5. There was "bamboo" on the wall of our bathroom which is concerning as I would find that wall to be difficult to clean. Again, this is a perhaps, a personal preference but I would want to scrub walls in a bathroom at least periodically. 6.There was an odd odor in our room (a hidden air freshener, the cleaner that was used?) Overall, the place (both inside and outside) could use some TLC and some de-cluttering. I know there is a challenge to owning a place that is almost one hundred years old but the place just looked …tired.

We were disappointed. First we paid and thought we had the diamond room, which had a river view, but we received the opal room which does not have a river view. Second the tv was not working, after an hour I was told I could watch in the diamond room, which was supposed to be our room. I wanted to relax and get comfortable so I didnt go to that room to watch tv. We are not fancy breakfest eaters and just wanted eggs and ham. The breakfast looked good but we are on a carb watch and ate little. We were not offered a rebate, which should have occured due to receiving a less costly toom

As to the December 3rd stay I had at your place I wanted to express my thanks for the wonderful time and the place you have there. You were very attentive and the hot tub was exactly what I needed. The room was clean and felt like a nice old home that let me relax and just enjoy my off time. Even though I needed to run first thing in the morning your staff made me breakfast when I returned and it was the best. What a wonderful cook and service and conversation she had. This was well worth the visit and I plan to do this again. Thank you and best regards, Jim Bailey

This b&b is not for everyone, but I think if you give it a chance, it will win over the majority of guests. The facility is full of history - the building itself, as well as the antiques that fill it. If you prefer a minimalist environment then this b&b will not be in your comfort zone. If you enjoy historical spaces and unique decor then you will find this b&b a treat. We stayed in the Sapphire Suite. It was clean and the beds were comfortable. The suite was quite spacious so we had plenty of room to spread out our luggage and ourselves. I believe all the rooms are similar in providing more than adequate space. Due to the age of the building there is not central air and heat, but the window units kept the suite quite comfortable even when outdoor temps were in the 90s. The owners were attending a family function out of town, but the two women who were hosting were very friendly. We received small plates of crudité and drinks as well as homemade cookies at 5pm each day. Our two mornings of breakfast were very good. There is always coffee, tea, yogurt, toast, fresh fruit, cereal, milk and orange juice. The specials we enjoyed over the two days were peach cobbler, scrambled eggs, sausage, quiche, and a berry pancake type casserole. Again, while our initial impression was one of hesitancy due to the eclectic nature of the furnishings, we were completely won over by the staff, the food and the comfortable spaces. This facility has many positive reviews and we can affirm that they are earned.

When I arrived at this call B&B I was so disappointed just looking at the outside of the house, very outdated with no maintenance at all, very disorganized and a bad smell all over the house, the bedroom very large with bad smell , the pillows and the bed sheets probably 20 years old and the bathroom very dirty the toilet so small . I do not recommend this place to nobody please stay away from this B&B , The pictures you see are maybe from 10+ years old not actual pictures. DO NOT RECOMMEND

My wife, brother in law and I returned yesterday from a second stay at this great B+B. Yes it is 'quirky' but that is WHY you stay at a B+B. If you want cookie cutter pick a Hampton Inn (or similar)!!! Very clean, nice owners and staff, great location and very nice breakfast (great coffee also). They have a nice deck on the second floor that would be an EXCELLENT place to see a launch because this place is DIRECTLY across the water from the space center launch pads.

First the good (why I gave the second star) - Sabrina was our hostess when we arrived. She was very helpful, and her hospitality was exceptional. She pointed out the chips and freshly baked cookies available then and told us about the cocktail hour later. Sabrina helped us up to our suite (2 narrow flights of stairs) and gave us a little history of the house. She recommended a couple of places for dinner and couldn't have been more helpful. The next morning there was another lady there (sorry I forgot her name), brought us out a tasty breakfast of fancy scrambled eggs, German pancake and ham. There were small fruit plates, juice and coffee, yogurt, toast and some other small options. Now, why I will never go back - The house is dark and very heavily decorated with antiques. Our suite (Black Pearl) had its own bathroom but NO HOT WATER. There were four of us and no one took a shower. Later we learned that the hot and cold were reversed and apparently you need to leave the cold on for a while before it warms up. No warning, no sign to advise, just cold water (and all 4 of us tried to figure it out.) Also, apparently, they have known about this for 6 months but when we called Ginny to complain she said the sign must have been stolen (a house full of antiques and someone wants to steal the informational sign?) She offered no compensation because we should have called, and she would have advised us to warm up the "cold" water. We all had to sit on the king bed to watch tv and there was no tv in the 2nd bedroom. Very awkward. Attention to details (many small that I did not list) would help the guest experience. It just seemed that the owner has given up trying to make things right and is working on getting by.
