If you are used to 5* large chain hotels then this may not be for you, however you will miss meeting a wonderful woman named Vana, a force of nature, a modern-day Greta Garbo , who runs the hotel and heads up a small, friendly team of staff. We found the facilities to be exactly what we needed, balcony and veranda, all with a fabulous sea view. It is a small hotel with a very decent-sized swimming pool, so there was never any concern about seating and, in any case, each room has designated loungers by the pool. A delicious breakfast was brought to the table of our veranda each morning, at which point Vana would discuss our plans for sight-seeing and offer really useful suggestions on the best places to go in terms of authentic Santorini (sometimes not easy to find). Across the road from the hotel is a country road leading down to the sea inside the caldera, the views are stunning and if you have an interest in geology then you can get very close to 100s of millions of years of rock formations. Santorini has become over-crowded with tourists and so many of the more famous parts of this small island are really to be avoided, especially as the noise from silencer-free quad bikes can be quite over-whelming. But The Fisherman's House is situated in a much quieter area of the island and we felt we had reached sanctuary when getting back there each evening. But I cannot emphasise enough how important Vana was to the pleasure of our stay - as an example, we had problems with our car hire at one point and Vana was straight in there, fighting our corner in Greek as if defending the Alamo.
