We live part time in Montevideo and have visited Piriapolis several times but have never stayed here. We have often driven past Argentino Hotel and thought it would be great fun to stay in what appeared to be a gem of a property. So, we chose a beautiful weekend, made a reservation drove to Piriapolis. The hotel reserves the perfect location on the Rambla and beach, a short walk from downtown. The facade is spectacular and is an architectural gem from the past. They have great parking and an absolutely stunning lobby. Check-in was fast and courteous and we made our way onto the gated elevators. to our room. We were surprised when we exited the elevator at the size of the hallways. They are 15 feet wide with large windows at the ends open to the sea breeze and rather dark due to the burnt-out ceiling fixtures. We could not help but notice that the chipping paint on the walls, doors and trim was in serious need of repair. We entered our room, which was a nice size, to see the same state of repair, and ugly carpet that you would install in a storage room. The room did have a wonderful view of the sea which was welcomed. The bathroom was also in need of some updating but we did not these minor issues detract from the overall splendor of the hotel. We decided to have dinner in the dining room and it was excellent. There was also live music and dancing. The pools in the rear are very nice along with the huge grassy area with tables and chair for lounging and an efficient outdoor bar/restaurant. The breakfast buffet was nice but nothing to cheer about. We understood that the hotel is owned by the government and managed by a private group. It's obvious that the government does not want to allocate any capital to repair this once beautiful hotel. We hope that it can be revitalized similar to the Sofitel Hotel in Carrasco. This could be a 4-5 Star hotel if it was given the attention that it deserves.
