Powderhorn Chateau

Stayed 1 night with my wife, room was clean and comfortable, the view was beautiful, food and staff was perfect. Plenty of thing to do we did the walks next time mountain biking Would I go back and recommend to friends and family HELL yes I loved staying there and will be going back soon.

What a treat! Had a romantic two nights at the Powderhorn while on a short trip to the snow. The alpine atmosphere of the building, the very, very comfortable beds and the helpful friendliness of the staff made our stay really unforgettable. I had a couple of work meetings during my stay and the staff was most helpful throughout my booking process in assuring me they have very fast and reliable fibre. Indeed I had zero problems working, had the ease of being able to go downstairs for affordable meals and coffee in between meetings and then was able to enjoy my downtime with the many fun outdoor activities in the area. Would strongly recommend to anyone :)

We stayed mid-week for 2 nights. Our room on the 1st floor had a balcony, was nice & warm [double glazed] with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom had been refurbished & included a bath. The food & service, by very attentive staff, in both the Powderhorn Restaurant & Powderkeg Bar were of a very high standard & good value. Apart from some minor noise from the occupants of the room on the floor directly above it was a very good stay.

After our first days travel on the Northern Explorer train, this was our accomodation for two nights. Unfortunately it rained most of the way from Auckland to Ohakune but out welcome here was great. A roaring fire, great evening meal and a pleasant bar to socialise in. The following day the weather improved and we did get to see much of the area, including a walk in the rainforest in Tongariro National Park and a bus trip around some of the ski resorts, such as Whakapapa. It was a great spot to stay with laundry facilities and comfortable rooms.

We decided to break our train journey from Wellington to Aukland and took a chance on this Chateau. We were so glad that we did. We stayed for two nights, in "The House", not a hotel room. This is a three-bedroom house with a good kitchen and bathroom, comfortable lounge room and nice outdoor terrace. It also has a wood fired heater, for which they provide plenty of wood. Then there's the dining room! We weren't disappointed there either. We ate there both nights and had delicious food. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, including taking us into town to the supermarket. Otherwise, it was a looong walk. A special shout out to Scarlett who was a great help following the unexpected cancellation of our next accommodation in Aukland.

The building is very dated. The bathroom was mouldy. The shower fluctuated between boiling and freezing. The food is overpriced. It’s unlikely that I’ll be back to stay. Would have been good in the 80s

Most of the Hotel was closed off, with doors closed, lights and heating off. Wanted to use the pool, but that was closed. Restaurant was closed. Had to have a Bar Meal in the public bar area with locals in their workwear. Had a beer, tried to have the Calamari - but that was heavily greasy and I felt a little sick. Went back up to our rooms early to get warm. Checked out and left early next morning, didn't even bother to ask for breakfast - went to a local cafe.
