From walking through the door, this hotel felt special. The hotel smelt beautiful and we were greeted warmly by the concierge and Nikita on reception, who checked us in quickly and even gave us vouchers for a free drink in the bar after discovering my husband and I were celebrating our birthdays! The room was of a modern design and was bright and spacious. Everything was immaculately clean and it was equipped with a coffee machine, thick and fluffy bath robes, slippers and gorgeous Temple Spa toiletries. The beds were extremely comfortable with soft, fluffy pillows. As we headed out to explore, the concierge offered us tips on the area, a tourist map and details of how to get a discount on the Tourist Bus. We loved exploring Liverpool and when we returned back to the hotel when enjoyed an hour in the bar. Again the staff were friendly and attentive, stopping for a chat as they walked past, but without being intrusive. After a great nights sleep, we went down for breakfast, which was of exceptional quality. We had everything we needed but were asked regularly if there was anything else we required, more juice, coffee or food. We checked out and left our luggage whilst we had another day exploring. Before heading home, we enjoyed a complementary hot chocolate with coconut rum (which was a nod to local history we were told) and had a lovely chat with Billy, the concierge, who told us more about the hotel and the area. I would urge anyone visiting this wonderful city to stay at this hotel. We couldn’t fault it!

NB - I'm being generous by giving 4 stars, but it's not possible to give 3.5, and it was better than a 3. IHG hotels are my first choice when I travel, and I was looking forward to trying the new Halyard property in Liverpool where we had concert tickets. The public spaces are lovely - light and airy with attractive furnishings. The bedrooms are, for the main, very nicely appointed. Large fluffy towels and a selection of proper wine glasses were particular plus points. We didn't hear any noise from outside, though that may have been because it was Sunday night. The bathroom is rather oddly constructed (sink outside and clunky sliding door), but full marks for not installing any glass panels as this is so annoying at night! We had dinner and breakfast in Voyager restaurant and both were really good - the small plates menu is worth going for even if you're not staying at the hotel, and it was a pleasant surprise to see a very reasonably-priced wine list. Service was impeccable and definitely enhanced the experience. Where it fell down for me was that there was no upgrade (it was Sunday and very quiet), or other recognition of IHG Diamond status. If The Halyard wants to attract current IHG members, it needs to get on board with this, as I'm not the only reviewer who's commented on this. Also, the "stocked mini bar" per the room description consisted of 2 cans of water - seriously?! Even Holiday Inns manage a couple of bottles of beer and a chunky Kit Kat!

It was an amazing stay. The room was beautiful, the food was amazing and the staff were lovely. We stayed for 2 nights and planned to eat in the restaurant on the first night but the food was so good we ate there again. Members of staff were friendly and helpful making sure that our stay was the best. They all seem incredibly proud of where they work and rightly so.

Do not stay here if you want to sleep. Rooms back on to a noisy road with late night bar. Eveyone singing late at night. Shouting loud at night. Really worst hotel i’ve stayed in as someone who travels for a living this has been my worst experience of a hotel. When made a complaint, staff advised well nobody else has complained before.

This hotel is exceptional when you consider both its city centre location and price. From the outside it doesn’t look much but inside you are surrounded by one of the most considered and high quality designed hotels we’ve had the pleasure of staying in. The style and finish (the design is influenced by the haylard rope, a nod to Liverpool’s heritage) is more like a luxury 5* hotel. Staff are warm and welcoming, we were even offered a hot chocolate and white rum shot on arrival. The staff had a passion and enthusiasm for the hotel and the city. Breakfast was lovely and well worth the upgrade (the tomato pork sausages are worth it alone) The hotel is near the hustle and bustle of trendy pubs and bars and whilst these are open late and we could hear the buzz from them when we hit the sack it wasn’t too much that we couldn’t sleep. The docks and shopping areas are both just a short walk from the hotel. We will definitely be returning and soon.

For me what makes a hotel stay good bad or indifferent is the staff. The staff at The Hilyard are fantastic. From reception, greeting, service, maintenance all were so helpful going about what they did with smiles on their faces. Nothing too much trouble. Helped us out with our baggage to our cars and waved us off, and with a handshake!! Rooms, showers, beds, comfort are spot on and everything top notch. Highly recommended.

Overall a great experience. My only complaint is the quality of the coffee. An automated coffee machine wouldn’t impress even the instant coffee drinkers of this world! (Maybe it would) But as a self proclaimed coffee snob this didn’t impress me. Staff, facilities, location ~ outstanding just go to Pret-A-Manger for your morning brew!
