My recent four-day stay at the hotel in Gent, Belgium, housed in a charming 19th-century former monastery, was unfortunately marred by several significant issues. Upon arrival, the historic charm of the building was evident and quite captivating. However, the allure quickly dissipated as the stay progressed. Firstly, a standard room lacked en-suite toilets and shower compartments. While this detail is mentioned on the booking site, it is buried in the fine print, a detail easily missed by prospective guests. This is not an amenity gap one would expect from an establishment that charges €135 per night for a standard single-occupation room. Moreover, the hotel failed to provide hot water for two consecutive nights, despite repeated complaints. This fundamental necessity is non-negotiable for any guest, and the hotel’s inability to address the issue promptly was highly disappointing. The lighting situation in several rooms was another major letdown. There were no main lights, leaving rooms dimly lit. When reported, the receptionist unhelpfully and incorrectly stated that the lamps were merely for decoration. This lack of adequate lighting significantly impacted the comfort and usability of the rooms. Adding to the discomfort were the creaking floorboards in the corridors, which disturbed even not-so-light sleepers at midnight. The noise level was unacceptable and further disrupted what was supposed to be a restful stay. While the hotel's historic setting is undeniably beautiful, the experience was marred by these significant issues. For an established hotel, the expectations are high, and basic amenities like hot water, proper lighting, and sound insulation should be a given. Overall, my stay was disappointing, and these issues reflect poorly on the hotel's standards. Future guests should be aware of these potential inconveniences, especially given that some are not adequately disclosed upfront.

When it comes to thinking of places to visit in Belgium, the town of Aalter in East Flanders, probably isn't the first place to spring to mind. Granted it doesn't have the charm of the Belgian coast, or the bustling hubbub of the larger, more tourist-oriented attractions, but its central location halfway between the cities of Gent and Brugge make it an great place from which to explore. The 4-star Best Western Hotel Orchidee in the center of Aalter provides an ideal base where you can plan your explorations. Aalter train station is a 15 minute walk away, and from there you can catch one of the regular trains to Gent or Brugge, with either journey taking half an hour. Alternatively, as the E40 motorway is just a few hundred meters from the hotel, both cities are accessible by car in around 20 minutes. I stayed at Hotel Orchidee for 3 nights just after Easter, 2022. The earliest check in is 2pm, and so this was the time I designated upon booking. (A word of caution for those hoping for a late check in. The reception desk closes at 11pm.) I arrived at the hotel at 2:05pm and was greeted by Piet, the hotel manager, who told me that my room would be ready in 10 minutes. There are several facets that I would expect from front of house staff - especially the manager - of a 4-star hotel. One of these is that they should be well groomed, besuited preferably, but nevertheless tidy in appearance. After all, they represent the hotel, a guest's first impression of what they might expect; and as the saying goes ”You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.” My first impression of Piet was that he was someone for whom sartorial elegance was not a phrase he was familiar with, with one too many buttons open on his creased shirt and apparent indecision on whether said shirt should be tucked in his trousers or not. Still he was amiable enough and pointed to the spacious, well-appointed bar off to the right of reception, where I could wait for my room. Whilst waiting, in addition to noting that the bar staff were better attired than the manager, I had time to peruse the menu, and discovered that a hungry guest could choose from crisps, nuts, a plate of cheese and salami, or a Croque Monsieur. Not exactly what I would expect from a 4-star hotel kitchen. I would later discover that the reason for this limited dining experience is due to the fact that the hotel does not employ a chef. Piet the manager is apparently chief, cook, and bottle washer, which probably explains why room service is not offered. My room was on the second floor overlooking the car park (which incidentally provides free parking, except on Saturdays when the Farmers Market is held), and no fewer than six bottle banks that are almost constantly in use throughout the day. If, like 1970s singer-songwriter Nick Lowe you ”love the sound of breaking glass”, this will make you feel right at home, otherwise it's somewhat irksome. The room was spacious enough, clean, with modern decor and
I stayed for a night as part of a business trip, primarily being attracted to the hot l because of the indoor swimming pool. The hotel was lovely, in a really nice area and had a really welcoming, relaxed feel. Check in was good and the receptionist really helpful, there was a small bar and we sat in the terrace with our drinks which was really pleasant. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was great we made Bacon sandwiches which were really nice. I also used the pool for an early morning swim. The pool is small, but you can reserve it for your private use which is great. There is also a sauna. Overall this is a fantastic, privately owned, very reasonably priced boutique hotel with a lovely feel. I would recommend to anyone visiting Ghent and would love to stay again.
Iirene_aptxThis hotel enjoys a wonderful location within feet of the old town. A 3 minute stroll takes you to a beautiful canal in the heart of the old city. The foyer, bar area and breakfast room are beautiful - full of character and period charm. Breakfast is good - even soy yogurts and milk alternatives were provided. Reception staff are mixed with some lacking basic hospitality skills. After a long journey you might expect a smile and a warm welcome, not rude as such but lacking charm. The rooms - I have stayed here 3 times in 3 different rooms, all of which were spacious. However, and this IS an issue for me, only a handful of rooms are in the main building. Some are in the external courtyard, worse still some are up external steps / decking (think American motel). I specified main building but they have a very liberal interpretation of this. It extends to all rooms accessed via the external courtyard. It wasn’t an issue for us as our room was 6 feet from the main door on ground level. I should also add that the room was very nice and spacious but stifflingly hot with no option to adjust the temperature. f you are on an upper deck, walking in the rain to go for breakfast may be a sticking point. The hotel also has another building (a 2 minute walk down the street) in a dark courtyard. The rooms are nice but make sure that you are aware of your accommodation. Having stayed in this part previously, I found it very annoying walking for breakfast and this area lacked the security of being in a hotel. In short, lovely location, nice hotel but do be aware of where exactly your room is situated - it could be in an external motel annex or in another building entirely. Tips : as you walk out of the hotel, turn right and right again by the Mariott and you will be by the canal. Tip 2 : there is an excellent supermarket directly opposite but it’s very easy to miss as it looks small and unassuming from the outside. Tip 3 : Tram no1 can be found directly opposite The Body Shop. It will take you to Sint Peters and very regular trains will take you to both Bruges and Brussels within 25 minutes at a cost of €10 ish per journey.
IIona RVery tired rooms and way overpriced. We booked a dinner, bed and breakfast rate well in advance. When we got there we were informed that because dinner was not available at weekends ( not mentioned at all when we booked ) they would have to cancel our reservation and offer us the walk in rate for bed and breakfast, which wasn't much less that we had paid to include dinner. They suggested we eat at a very expensive hotel which was nearest to them. The receptionist shrugged and said take it or leave it. We took it because it was late and dark and we didn't fancy driving around looking for somewhere else. One of the bedside lights was broken, the previous heater had come off the wall and they had hot wired a normal one into the wall socket. Every now and then it gave out green sparks! There were no plugs in either the bath or the wash hand basin and one of the sheets had a big rip in it. Breakfast was pretty nondescript and the room had a large sign saying if you took any items out of the room they considered it theft. We have stayed in other Campaniles in the past which were fine but never again.
