Staying at Jiuhuli·Siheyuan Guesthouse (Ancient City Drum Tower Branch) 玖合里·四合院民宿（大同古城华严寺店） was truly one of the highlights of our trip. The location is absolutely unique — being inside the ancient city walls of Datong and staying in a traditional Chinese courtyard house made the entire experience feel authentic and unforgettable. It is much more than just a hotel; it is a cultural experience. The decoration and design are impeccable: elegant, refined, and beautifully done with incredible attention to detail. The rooms are extremely comfortable, with high-quality products, premium facilities, and a very peaceful atmosphere that made us feel at home immediately. What made our stay even more exceptional was the outstanding service. The staff went above and beyond in every possible way. They helped us arrange an excellent private driver at a very reasonable price, which allowed us to enjoy a perfectly smooth and efficient day visiting three major attractions outside the city: the Hanging Temple, the Yungang Grottoes, and the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. Everything was organized flawlessly, making the trip completely stress-free and enjoyable. Overall, the service was simply amazing from beginning to end. I was greeted with a fruit platter during check-in, which was a wonderful welcome gesture considering I left my home about 24 hours earlier, traveling non-stop from California to Datong, China. The Inn provides a wonderful experience for the first-time foreign visitor. The interior decor has that Chinese charm consisting of artwork, a book display, an aquarium with an auspicious collection of 8 large fishes (carp, I think), in-room tea set with an on-table electric stove, which would be unique to most Westerners. The glass flooring adds an extraordinary appeal since I have never experienced that in a hotel before, and I have traveled to dozens of countries. The Inn is well located, a short bus ride to Datong Railway Station (for non-high-speed rail travel)*, and a short taxi ride to Datong South Railway Station (for high-speed rail travel)**. It is just next to Datong City Wall. You can walk along the top of the City Wall at no cost. A 10-20 minute walk takes you to nearly all the attractions within the ancient City Wall. Here you will also find a variety of restaurants serving local food as well as souvenir shops. There is also a small shop that sells sundry items including drinks (beer included) within a 5-minute walk from the Inn. Across from this sundry shop, is a shop that specializes in ancient Chinese clothing (Hanfu dress). They can dress you up, cosmetics included. The Inn provides directions to Yujian Yun Gang - a popular destination for travelers to Datong. Here you will see ancient Buddhist cave art, including large and tall (several stories tall) sculptures. It takes two bus rides to get there, 1RMB per ride. My booking choice was for either a guest room on the 1st or 2nd floor but was assigned a wonderful 2nd-floor guest room. The owners of the Inn were exceptionally friendly. I met both the mother and her daughter. My room was professionally cleaned and provided with drinking bottled water daily. If I return to Datong in the future, I will certainly book a room at this Inn. *I took a train from this station to travel south to Xinzhou after checking out. **I arrived in Datong from Beijing Daxing International Airport
