This hotel is awful, but has the potential to be brilliant if properly managed. We were booked in as part of a golf package, however had I had the choice with the number of appalling reviews it has, I would never have dreamt of booking it otherwise. On arrival we had drinks in the bar and as normal in such circumstances we put the cost on our bill, but on check-out we were stunned to see a 10% service charge. The bartender never even brought our drinks to our table, we carried them there ourselves. Our room, like all rooms was very old, the place originally being built as a farmhouse in 1668, and it was quite unique to be in such a very old property. However, there was only one hand towel, no soap no shampoo or other items such as body lotion expected to be found in hotels. By late afternoon there was no hot water available for a shower. Even the next morning it was necessary to shower before 7.00am as by 8.00am the hot water had been used up. After getting up early to shower we found the water flooded out under the seal on the bath and almost half of the bathroom floor had a layer of water over it. After a long drive before arrival, we decided to eat in the restaurant on our first night. The food was fine but incredibly expensive. Even cheap poor quality wine was charged at premium prices, along with of course the 10% service charge which was never justifiable. Breakfast on our first morning was served by a very grumpy woman who gave the impression that serving us breakfast was the last thing she wanted to do. The very small bowl of yoghurt had run out and I was dismissively told there was no more. If we wanted anything with toast, rather than explaining there were facilities available, we were told to, “Go and make it yourself.” It seems they alternated between a buffet breakfast and a waiter served breakfast according to the number of residents. On our final morning there was no buffet and my wife ordered scrambled eggs. However, when they arrived they were actually burned. I’ve never seen burned scrambled egg before, but the pattern from the frying pan that had been used was visible on the burned areas. There was no apology or offer to replace them, apparently the so called chef was too busy. When I asked to see the manager I was told she would be in shortly. When no one arrived I went to the reception to enquire and was told she had not arrived, but would be in soon and the receptionist would contact me we she arrived. Back in my room I received a call saying the manager had gone to a meeting and was not available. It seemed obvious to me that she was trying to avoid me. We were in this hotel for three nights and never before, during the day, has the thought of dreading returning to our accommodation occurred. This place has the potential to be brilliant, but no one seems to care about how bad it is, and despite so many appalling reviews on this site, no one from the hotel management has, as far as I can ascertain, ever responded t
