The staff are very nice and the location is excellent - city centre easily walkable and there is a bus for £2 single anyway. The cooked breakfast is good, usually, although tomatoes were a bit hard. Smashed Avocado on toast was very good, as were the poached eggs. Breakfast buffet is not very impressive. Would have liked more than one cheese and sorry-looking ham. Disappointed that espresso or cappuccino etc were charged extra when the room was more than £300 a night. Suggestion to put in a coffee machine in the breakfast area so people can help themselves. Bathroom was just about adequate but shower head fixed and the hairdryer was on the wall in the bathroom, so underpowered to say the least. Needs renovation to come up to today’s expectations. Realise this is a Victorian house but the plumbing is not good when you can have to flush the loo numerous times..The hotel also needs better ventilation. During the summer, it can get very hot. There was no fitness area, no spa etc. Room cleaned only on request and no replacement of water bottles unless you request them. Not sure what makes this 4-star in terms of facilities. Wouldn’t stay again at more than £300 a night for a room that needs serious renovation to make it pleasurable. There is an excellent restaurant just steps away over Banbury Rd called Gee’s. Two pubs/other restaurants and a small shop close by in North Parade Avenue.
Really enjoyed our 5night stay. The manager and every staff member were so friendly, polite and attentive. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. I was apprehensive about being in a room at the front due to previous reviews re noise but it honestly wasn't a problem at all. The breakfast room is delightful and leads to a beautiful relaxing well kept garden with nice furniture. Choice of cooked breakfast served to you or continental breakfast if preferred. I would definitely recommend Pickwicks and look forward to visiting in the future. Trip Advisor says this hotel is 'pet friendly' this is incorrect as they do not accept pets

I had a night's stay at the Balkan Lodge Hotel in early December. I booked a single room and was using it as a short stopover on my way to Swindon. I'd never visited Oxford before so it was an opportunity to have a look around the city. The first thing that attracted me to the Balkan Lodge was the free parking. And there is a car park at the rear of the property with room for about 8 cars. It's a large building and after parking I went through to the reception and checked in with the very helpful host John. My room was upstairs and whilst not the biggest was okay. Clean and tidy, plenty of tea bags, coffee, a kettle that worked and a decent little t.v. The bathroom was small but usable and the room was warm. A minor demerit the hotel no longer do breakfast so for the £80 I paid I felt it was ten pounds too much. I was aware of this before I booked so no major issue really. There is a cafe just up the road, 'Sylvie' and I used that for breakfast the next morning although it was pricey. It's part of another guest house I believe. The other thing to be aware of with the Balkan Lodge is that it's a fairly long walk to Oxford centre and all the major attractions. Over a mile I'd say. I'm sure a taxi would be possible though. Overall I had a decent stay at the hotel and would be happy to use it again.
KKeith bAs a guesthouse we should compare it to other guesthouses but not when they are charging hotel prices. On arrival the staff was very rude. On being lectured on arrival we were asked to pay beforehand and then told our room was in the basement and my in laws were upstairs. On arrival at room I noticed mould on one wall, and it was 32 degrees and the room had no air conditioning. There was a very small shower room and I am generous if I say the tv was 10 inches. My in laws could not stand in their room, due to the sloping roof and had no place to hang their clothes. I went to reception to ask if they had a room with air con to which he said they were fully booked. I asked about their cancellation and refund policy and was told right now if I wanted it. I went to discuss it with the family when my son appeared and said that we had been asked to leave immediately because our attitude was not to be tolerated. I was upset but nothing major. Anyways I was very glad to see that the nearby travelodge had rooms at a mere £20-£30 more for the 3 days and proceeded to book and leave the said guesthouse. Ok the travelodge is a bit further away but you have taxis, buses and e scooters so no hassle in exchange for the comfort. My wife had stayed here years earlier and said that the standard has dropped significantly, with what was our room having been a breakfast lounge before. Having been in the hotel industry I found the guest house way below standard for guest house standards let alone travelodge/premier inn prices which he is charging. Customer service is key and these gentlemen had none:. Please do yourself a favour and do not stay here. Oxford has plenty of choices do not be fooled. This guest house should be downgraded by all sites and even inspected. Deplorable deplorable and more deplorable. A course in customer care is also essential for the staff here. It was our first day and nearly spoilt my holiday, had it not been for the abundance of options available at the click of a button.
ผผู้เข้าพักThe only good thing about the tower house is the location, very central for everything. But it goes downhill from there, managers are non existent, very difficult to get hold of by phone and extremely rude and uncaring. The photos on their sites are of the two rooms they keep tidy for publicity and even they are not great. We arrived and had to phone, took several attempts for them to answer, they gave us code to keybox, let ourselves in, totally unmanned reception so had to phone again about which room we were in as no one was there. We were told that two rooms shared a bathroom which would have been ok but in reality The only bathroom is on the top floor with four flight of stairs and shared between 6 other rooms! So as you can imagine it was terrible to try and use the shower/ toilet as it was always occupied but we didn't really want to use it as it was so dirty with mould, mildew etc. We were in The little blue room, a small double but it wasn't a double bed but a queen size one so very small. There was a sink in a very dark alcove with no light as it was broken. The room itself was very dirty, stained carpet and bedding, dirty curtains, marks on walls, holes in the walls, large mark on one wall with holes where the bed head had been fixed to wall! Overall a very unkempt dirty room. The whole house had a feeling of disrepair, neglect, dirty, as if the owners couldn't be bothered. So sad to see a grade II listed building kept in such a condition. Feel that they just wanted peoples money and are uncaring of the condition of the house. We were not the only ones with similar complaints and concerns about broken and dirty rooms. When we complained we were told that it you don't like it then leave! We are writing to Oxford council ref the state of a listed building and the owners attitude towards visitors and contacting the other sites where they are listed to make people aware.
This hotel self rates as 2 stars - room was small, no bath, small sink, desk, only stool no chair. Nothing else. Shared bath. If you are on tight budget & this is what you want, then it’s ok. Conveniently located by train station. Negatives: internet was unacceptably slow. Carpets in common areas dirty and need a deep clean. A paint job would make common areas more presentable. Stairs extremely narrow and steep. Continental breakfast included; staff friendly, helpful except for one grumpy individual.
If it was not for the amazing staff, I would have left and asked for full refund. The manager - I believe her name is Ema, and room cleaning lady, they call her Auntie were amazing. She did everything from cleaning the rooms, hotel, and cooking! She deserves a raise. I think the owner is lucky - did not meet him, but here is my feedback directly to him: You ate lucky to have such dedicated staff. Please acknowledge them and reward them. The hotel has a lot of deferred maintenance. No hot or good pressure bathroom water. Beds are old, window does not work, no light bulbs in fixtures, no heating, very cold rooms …. Etc etc May be you are waiting to sell the place. However, I think you should consider spending some money on capital repairs. The breakfast is terrible. Please try your self the Spanish or bacon omelette!
