ONE OF THE BEST PUB ACCOMMODATIONS ON THE SOUTH DOWNS. This place has everything a hiker or tourist could want in pub accommodations. The rooms are charming, pin-neat and adequately sized (remember, this is a country inn, not a Marriott). The staff is friendly, helpful and absolutely delightful. The setting is idyllic….right in the village green of East Dean. The food in the pub is excellent, and then you can grab a pint and sit out on the green as night descends, enjoying conversation and a sky that gradually deepens into a deep blue, sparking with stars. The location is great….about 3/4th of a mile hike to the beach and the hike up seven sisters or beachy head. Frequent bus service goes east and west to Eastbourne or Brighton. Infrequent bus service to the south takes you to the waterfront and Beachy Head (plan carefully)

We were really pleased with the rooms. Really happy with our decision to stay after the Seven Sisters hike rather than going back to London right away. Highly recommended.

Fantastic stay! Highly recommend. My partner and I stayed for a night. Arrived rather late and the staff were still up waiting for us. Acknowledged us by name and showed us up to our sea-facing room. Clean, well furnished, minimalist modern and spacious feel. Woke up to a fantastic unblocked sea view in our large window. Breakfast was available to all in the kitchen/ pantry from 7.30-10 with a more than decadent spread of your staples, hot fresh brewed tea and coffee. Minor drawback was the slightly longer walking distance from the city (about 15mins), no toothbrush available, and had I not read up online ahead of time, I’d never be able to find the place as there is (as many others have also mentioned) no clear sign that says “The Halcyon”. So to anyone to follow in our steps, this is honestly a beautiful place to stay. Excellent value for money away from the noise of the town centre, wonderful hospitable staff for a lovely guest experience, delightful & scrumptious brekkie, cosy and clean modernistic rooms & gorgeous views to wake up to. No hassle checking in or out. Just be mindful to look out for the big words that says “HOTEL” and you’re very likely at the right spot.
