"Went for a meal booked a table for 7.45 ( was offered 8pm) arrived got a few drinks at the bar sat down given menus read them pick the food waiter arrived to take our order at 7.59 for us to be told no starter cause the kitchen closed at 8 I was a little shocked he then went on to say you can have a starter but it will come with your main so at 8.10 mains arrived then starter a few minutes later the price things are now a days would it of been that bad for the kitchen staff just to of waited a few minute till we had eaten out starter the delivered our mains (the kitchen staff were still there at 9 when we left) felt very rushed and unwelcome"

"We stayed for two nights to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The hotel is one of the most comfortable Country House hotels we have ever stayed in. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. Our room was light, airy, pristine and spotlessly clean, with the most comfortable bed I have slept in - including my own! The lounges and bar are comfortable and tastefully decorated. The Michelin Star restaurant is situated in a beautiful room with high ceilings and views through the large bay windows of the grounds, including the remarkable Cedar tree that gives the restaurant its name. We ate from the Bistro menu on one night and had a delicious meal. On the other night, we had the Tasting menu, which was exceptional. On our last day, we booked afternoon tea and knowing that we intended to go out in the morning and that our room was not booked for that day , the hotel offered us a late checkout, at no extra cost, so that we could change our clothes etc. This offer was unsolicited and very welcome. The breakfast menu was more varied than most hotels we have stayed at and beautifully cooked. All in all, we had a lovely relaxed stay in a hotel that treated you like Royalty. We look forward to returning, hopefully with family/friends."

"We stopped in recently on a weekday for breakfast to treat ourselves and it was pretty disappointing. Two full 'Dickens' breakfasts that are described as including Cumberland sausage came with sausages that tasted to us like just standard pork chipolatas (no peppery flavour), but I accept that's pretty subjective. However, my husband's fried eggs were overcooked with no liquid or even jammy yolk at all and about half of the white of my poached eggs were still in the half-raw snot stage plus they hadn't been properly drained so there was a puddle of water on my plate. We also had to ask for butter for the toast, the mushrooms hadn't been trimmed so the cut ends of the stalks were tough and the tomato was full of hard green core inside. It all came across as so low effort, 'that'll do' mentality. In another review, the management responded to a criticism of the food with 'We always encourage guests to let a member of our team know while they are with us, as we would much rather have the opportunity to resolve any concerns immediately.' Well, we told our waitress about the eggs (just the eggs, because honestly we would have felt like such a pair of a***holes listing everything that was wrong), and her response was 'Sorry about that'. That was it. No offer of remaking the undercooked eggs or a bill reduction, not so much as a free top-up of tea (you don't get a drink included with your £13 breakfast). Training issue or policy? Who knows, and the effect on the customer is the same either way. The card machine was presented with the increasingly common simpering 'It'll just ask you a little question' and the question is, of course, an attempt to squeeze more money out of you in the form of a tip. I nearly laughed. The whole thing left us feeling like we'd been mugs for walking through the door. We're locals but I can't see us going back."
