Beautiful modern hotel, right in the centre (although you would ever know, no noise whatsoever). The pool area was lovely, well maintained and very chilled. The staff we all lovely, especially the two young men on reception (didn’t catch their names) who were really helpful when we had a problem with our air conditioning. Breakfast nice with plenty of choice. Get a room over looking the pool, well worth it. 5 minutes to the beach, 1 minute to the start of the Main Street that is full of shops (not touristy ones) and restaurants and bars. Rooms were modern and spotlessly clean. Would recommend this hotel in a flash, great place to stay and the staff are a credit to it.

Though there are many things to recommend this hotel and location—fantastic design and décor, stunning views from a panoramic pool and patio area, charming and crystal-clear Aiguablava beach just a short walk down a path from the hotel—my husband and I regretted our choice to stay here on our short, 3-night trip to the Costa Brava at the end of the summer. This was a disappointing stay in several small and easily remedied ways that, together, seemed like the guest experience was an afterthought at Parador de Aiguablava. For context: my husband and I are well-traveled, late 30-something Americans who go to Europe 2-4 times per year for work and holiday and stay in a range of 2-5 star accommodations. Here are the ways in which things fell a bit short, in our opinion: 1) Arrival, check-in, and information-sharing: The strangeness started at arrival, when we drove up the windy hillside road to the isolated hotel and arrived to a small and cramped parking lot with no bellhop or valet. My husband dropped me and our luggage off and I waited in front of the hotel while he carefully weaved his way through the tight lot—there were other cars parked in inappropriate places, in the absence of someone there to help with parking—and then drove about a ¼ mile down the hill to park the car along the road and then hiked back up. What about guests with mobility issues? If this was mid-pandemic, I could understand staff shortages, but not at a 4-star hotel in 2023. At check in, we were given a quick overview of the hotel services by friendly, English-speaking staff, but found ourselves short on information for the rest of our stay. There was no printed information (in any language, nor a QR code/ website) about hotel services, policies, and amenities in the room. This caused small inconveniences; for example: We got ready for the beach shortly after arriving, but it took us 20 minutes to find the path down to the beach when it should have taken us 3. This was in part because we expected a path leading directly from the pool area would go down to the beach, but only after walking a bit we realized that it was a path to the cliffs and did not connect to the beach. It easily could have had signs. We then recalled the check-in staff mentioning the beach was on the lower level and noticed a beach symbol in the elevator, but once getting down to the lower level it took us a moment to figure out we had to cross the lower-level parking lot to find the trail. This was a small thing, but it could have been a seamless experience (rather than a scavenger hunt) with a few more signs or a little more in-room information. 2) Room condition: There were several minor maintenance/cleaning issues in the lovely room that seemed like they could have easily been fixed: mildewy tile, a broken toilet paper holder, beat-up paint in a number of places, and a rusted vanity stool. 3) Coffee: This was, by far, the thing that annoyed us the most because it so easily could be fixed. As a previous hotel manager for a 4 star apartment hotel/apartment myself I will be completely honest and realistic with my review. Apartment - When you first step in you instantly think ” oh nice” but as soon as i took my shoes off and walked around my socks went from white to brown. Floors were filthy, Not only did they not mop the floors but they didn't even bother sweeping it. I even found crisps and hair on the floor. But as i was in holiday spirit I cleaned it myself and moved on. When it was time for a shower I noticed my towel had weird yellow stains on it, i then found that all the other towels were also horribly covered in stains with i dread to know what. Then the bed sheets! Bed sheets had stains. All 3 of them. At this point the receptionist pretended to act shocked and gave us another apartment. When we went into the other apartment it smelt awful, like sewage. Receptionist then gave us fresh towels and sheets but again, it was dirty. In the end, we just stuck to our normal apartment and washed all the bed sheets and towels ourselves which we had to pay. It came out sparking clean with no Stains!!. You will also need to clean up the apartment yourself and wash your own dishes before leaving, they give you a small pack of cleaning products to use. This won't last you if you are regularly cooking or using dishes frequently. You also have to provide yourself with toilet rolls and bin bags which i found strange. Everything needed to cook was there which was great. Internet - Was perfect, no issues. Aircon - only 1 in living room, another needs to be put in bedrooms to be honest. The fan for the ac was outside the balcony on the floor which leaked and blew cold and hot air at you while your sitting down. Noise levels - if you have neighbor's next to you or downstairs or even outside from the balcony you will definitely hear everything, this was fine for me personally but if you are a light sleeper then probably not. Swimming pool - playa 3 had a small pool, the water tasted extremely strange, almost like chemical salt. I couldn't swim in it. Other pools were great. They close all pools 7pm which is inconvenient as it would be a nice place to sit and socialise. Dogs - As much as i love them and the idea you welcome them to stay in the apartments, i spent my holiday hopping and dodging poop on the floors outside the building and around the area. Reception Manager should really implement fines for people not picking it up. Surrounding areas - Supermarkets were really close by, and tobacco shops. Cash machines were very close as well. There was a place around the corner to go bowling which was lovely as it had a bar and game room. There was also 2 bars with lively music and great choice of alcohol. Bars closed around 3.30am. Bowling around 1am. Beach - was so lovely, so close to the apartments, if you want to sit on a beach chair it will be 5 euros. They had a bar and cafe directly on the beach with incredible food. If there is one place that should be the standard for service and hospitality, this hotel is it. Absolutely incredible place, with incredible hospitality. I stayed 4 nights and really wished I could stay longer. Mario and Nadia treat you like family and take care of you every minute of your stay. The service, the homemade fresh delicious breakfasts, the location, and the rooms were all 10/10. Mario went above and beyond from the day I reserved until my last minutes to make sure I was happy and taken care of, checking in regularly. He was very responsive, and so so helpful for someone coming here for the first time. He suggested many amazing restaurants based on my dietary restrictions, and even helping to call and make reservations for me daily. Nadia is also a gem of this place, her smile, service and delicious food will make anyone want to come back. The rooftop has great views and is a great place to enjoy your coffee and relax. I will dream about this place until I’m able to come back again!
